Yantai new train station has come into acceptance phase by the train department. Project acceptance inspection and debugging of equipment have been developing smoothly, and the new train station is expected to be used in August.

All of the five railway platforms can take in motor train unit. When the interurban railway is completed in 2012, citizens will be able to arrive in different places all around China in high speed by motor coach train.

The design of the train station is quite unique. Overlooked from above, it looks like a phoenix extending its wings in flight. The Gate of City must be mentioned in particular. Its saddleback type steel structure has won the golden award for China steel structure. It is a distinctive sign of the city with a rainbow molding.

The design and construction of the new train station are advanced, which get ready for Yantai’s development in the future. This new train station is not the terminal station of railway traffic any more, it will become transportation hub connecting north China and northeast of China, or even an international transportation hub.

Storms Strike Yantai

On the afternoon of June 29th and August 20th, storms struck Yantai. After loud crashes of thunder, the sky darkened immediately. Fierce wind and rainstorms swept across the whole urban areas. And everything on the street were scattered here and there.

1.       Big trees were blown down in the gales.

2.       The wind drove down the rain and everywhere there was standing water.

3.       The rainwater flooded many streets, and rose above half of the wheel.

4.       This month’s storm was especially intense, with heavy rain and lightening strikes. The citizens were unprepared.

Yantai University 2009 Summer English Workshop

Children in Yantai will always enjoy themselves during summer holiday. The summer workshop is one of the best place to have fun, where children can not only make lots of friends, but also improve their English.

Now, let’s welcome Robert to introduce this interesting place to us.

Yantai University celebrated its 20^th Summer English Workshop with a dynamic Opening Ceremony on July 20, 2009. Almost 350 students, teachers, teaching assistances and university officials were treated to a performance on drums by Changyuetuan ( a band) , singing by Liu Yuqin, danced by Zhao Gang and John Denver. “Country Road”  was sung by Americans Lisa Davis and Zack Phillips.

Morning classes begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony. The workshop is three weeks long and ends on August 7. Seventeen Americans from Georgia and Tennessee are teaching and leading evening activities. Classes in the morning are from 8:30 to 11:30 am, then the foreign teacher take workshop students to lunch. At 2:30 pm, all the students assemble in one of two lecture halls for afternoon lectures covering a wide range of topics about American culture and life. Then at 3:30, students have an opportunity for an hour to ask questions of the American teachers during free talk.

A variety of evening activities are offered during the workshop, including dancing, relay races, scavenger hunt, game nights, sports nights, a mock American wedding, and a watermelon picnic. The workshop is an excellent opportunity for those who want to practice speaking English, improve their listening comprehension, and interact extensively with American teachers who have a love for China and the Chinese people. The workshop is academically rigorous, but in a friendly and fun-filled atmosphere.

The Bus 17 Game

All of us have experience of taking bus, so how do you like it? Robert, an American teacher would like to share his feeling with us.

The Bus 17 Game

I saw the number 17 on the bus as if approached the west gate of Yantai University, where I was waiting. I wanted to go downtown. As the bus stopped in front of me, I hesitated to get on because there was no room for any more passengers. Every seat was taken and there was no standing room anywhere on the bus. The bus driver yelled over the din of conversation, “ move back, make room” (in Chinese of course). A small space miraculously appeared, large enough for me and the others waiting at the West Gate to ride Bus 17.

I looked into the crowd, wondering just how many passengers were on the bus. Each succeeding stop, the bus driver yelled back to the crowed to make room. I had expected to get off the bus, but instead, more and more got on. I had thought it was physically impossible to get any more people on the bus but before I knew it, I was half way back. I began to wonder how I would even squeeze through the crowd to reach the rear exit door when my stop was reached. Somehow, and I’m not exactly sure how, I ended up of the bus at the appropriate stop.

That bus experience came to mind as I prepared for Game Night in the Yantai University Summer Workshop. One of the games we would play involved fitting a dozen students in the area encircled by a long piece of twine. Each time the dozen students found a way to fit inside the circle, the twine would be shortened by a couple feet. Eventually, the circle would become so small, it would be impossible for all the students to fit in it. I thought of the perfect name for the game, “ The Bus 17 Game”.
