Editor's Piece

Things have been really heating up in the lead up to this summer in Yantai, including the lightning-pace of construction, vigorous inward investment, accelerating economic development, exhilarating nightlife and of course the ever sizzling bikini's at Golden Beach! Yantai's rise in popularity as one of China's top tourist destinations is really putting this seaside city on the map. Last year about 12 million tourists arrived in Yantai, including over 100,000 from overseas. As the second largest City in Shandong Province by population and economy, it is not difficult to imagine that Yantai will be transformed to a modern and thriving international community within the next few years. And for expats living in this city, it won't be long before Yantai catches up with similar port cities such as Qingdao and Ningbo on its "internationalisation" course.

Already the keen-eyed and fast-moving Asian investors have recognised this city of opportunity, most  of the expat community are Korean or Japanese nationals . There are about  12,000  Koreans in Yantai  and  7,000 Japanese. According to reliable sources, the number of Westerners is now about 500, and expanding every week! Yantai's total population is close to 7 million. Recent major foreign investors include Taiwan-based Foxconn (Honhai Group) which is moving much of its telecom components manufacturing from Shenzhen in southern China to Yantai's Economic Development Zone, and the Philippines-based port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), which has recently taken over the Yantai Gangtong Container Terminal.   Other significant arrivals are Nomacorc (a  promising Belgium-USA new investment in Yantai Development Zone) as well as VMI from Netherlands in who have established operations at Yantai's new Economic Processing Zone (EPZ-B), Agrati from Italy  in Laishan District, Baudet Composites from France also in Laishan, and more on the way as we speak . . . . . . . . .

Clearly the focus of Shandong Province investment policy has shifted from Jinan, (capital of Shandong Province) and Qingdao, which have previously received most of the economic development support. Yantai's GDP has risen from 16.8% in 2005 to 17.0% in 2007, third highest in Shandong Province behind only Dezhou and Zaozhuang.

A Superb Ramada 5 stars Hotel  is now open in  Laishan! With a  great Western Buffet! Plans for a new Crown Plaza "6 Star Hotel" and leading global brands such as Justco and Starbucks to arrive in Laishan next year further indicate the city is really galvanised for internationalisation.

So as an expat living in or coming to Yantai, hang on tight and catch that wave !

Update from Yantai Investment Development Bureau

Yantai has an exceptional quality of life and infrastructure, with an outstanding position in the centre of North East Asia between Beijing , Shanghai , Dalian , Seoul, Tokyo, and Osaka.

Yantai  is a large and prosperous region covering 14,000 Sq.Km., with close to 7 million people, and including 13 Cities and Districts. Key sectors of activities are Agriculture, Agribusiness,  Shipyards, Wineries, Light Industries, Automotive industries (GM and scores of international subcontractors), large Gas and Petrol resources in Bohai Bay, High Tech, Research Laboratories, Textiles, Granite, Gold, Electronics, Fine Pharmaceuticals and Fine Chemicals, Tourism, and Fish-farming (900 km of coast line). Yantai has plenty of affordable and available land, space, as well as a talented work force. Yantai is enjoying one of the best  qualities/costs ratio in China, as per Economist Experts. Yantai is now the 18th biggest Economy in China and the 2nd in Shandong. Shandong Province is now second place in China in terms of GDP. Not only does Yantai have these natural resources but it is still a very cost effective place to be located in China.

Last year, the World Bank, after surveying 120 Chinese Cities and 12,400 manufacturing firms in China, has ranked: Yantai among the 6 Golden Cities in China for its excellent investment climate, outstanding quality of life, natural environment, cost efficiency and harmonious society. CASS (China Academy of Social Sciences) has ranked  Yantai number 8 in China. Both of these organizations reached these conclusions after evaluation of hundreds of Chinese Cities.

Yantai is an ideal HUB for shipping and logistics. Yantai has a very large port (among the top 10 in China with an estimated annual shipment of 120 million tons) which links Yantai to over 100 ports all over the world. 7,000 km of brand-new highways have been completed inside Yantai Region.

Yantai's International and Domestic Airports have 320 flights per week linking Yantai to many Cities in China and overseas: It is very easy to fly from Beijing (1 hour) or Shanghai (1.5 hours) to Yantai with several flights per day. From Seoul it is even closer, only 45 minutes (with several flights  per day): Other flights include Osaka: three days per week; and Hong Kong: four days per week.

Yantai has excellent Education resources with 7 Universities, 16 Technical Colleges , 100,000 students, more than 100  Foreign Teachers and  Professors.

And as far as healthcare is concerned, Yantai has several First Class Hospitals (including Yantai Shan Hospital and Yuhuangding Hospital).

ACCW Seashore Leisure Zone Opens in Autumn

Opening this Autumn, AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK has been designed to bring to Yantai a unique combination of shopping, entertainment and nightlife, with western style bars, restaurants and a clean and comfortable seafront environment which maintains its natural cultural heritage. This will be like Shanghai's Shintiandi but 5 times the size, with a beautiful sea view and a lot more fun for all the family in Shandong!

THE AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK covers an area of 150,000 square meters, with a construction space of over 46,000 square meters. It is a multinational multi-functional shopping center presented with a spectacular natural landscape. ACCW faces the beautiful ocean waters of the Bohai Bay near the coast of YANTAI. Along with the surrounding areas known as the YANTAI HILL, it has long been the window and symbol of the city. Although a culturally traditional city, the presence of 19th century European and American architecture is prevalent at the AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK.

For an internationalized commercial project like the AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK, its market positioning and business function planning is essential for success. This area will inevitably become the leading state-of the-art commercial complex that matches the high-end consumption needs of the community. The AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK systematically combines shopping, entertainment, restaurants, and bars. It successfully integrates various business functions with the unification of admirable environment advantages. The ACCW brings to Yantai a western style community center while maintaining its natural cultural heritage. The ACCW shopping center creates a "one-stop" shopping environment, providing an unforgettable shopping, leisure and entertainment experience for all consumers.

Situated in the middle of a bustling business district and residential area, AMBER COASTAL CITY WALK is designed to fulfill consumers' pursuit of shopping and leisure activities. ACCW is designed as an open-air "street-oriented" venue devoted to upscale international chain stores, "New Generation" department stores and supermarket, sporting goods shops, book and media stores, electronic stores, and home accessories stores. Family entertainment venues, renowned restaurants, and lively nightclubs create a leisure destination suitable to fit the needs of citizens from all walks of life.

Summer of 2007 - Bar Street Gets a Makeover
Anybody that is thinking about heading down to Chaoyang Street (a.k.a. "Chaoyang Jie", "Bar Street" or "Jiu Ba Jie") for a quiet beer or even a boisterous night out, is in for a bit of a shock these days, whether they have been there before or not! Chaoyang Street is right next to the base of Yantai Hill with the north end right at the Yantai Hill Park Entrance, and the south end at the intersection with Bei Ma Lu (Beima Road), not far away from the Changyu Wine Museum.

With a fair number of varied bars, karaoke lounges, internet cafes, small Chinese restaurants and tiny dubious "hair-dressers", Chaoyang Street is one of Yantai's main nightlife venues and is popular with both visitors and longer term residents. However, the Summer of 2007 has witnessed this old run-down street being completely dug up, new drainage put in, re-surfaced, buildings scaffolded and hammered, and mud and dust like you'd never believe. Walking down the street this month is treacherous, whether full of beer or empty. (Please see photos below).

It literally looks as if a bomb has dropped on Chaoyang Street, or a grenade went off in a firework factory, and so thank goodness we still have other nightlife venues to go to: Alibaba's - "still goes on pumping", Jackie's - "keeps on rockin' and rollin'", Face Bar - "too good to be true in Yantai", Red Box Bar - "revamped and scorching hot", and the newly relocated Color Bar - "for those of such persuasions".

But for those tough and faithful amongst us, the doors are still a-jar and the beers are still a-flowing at a few establishments including Havana Bar, and Bohemia Bar. And rumour has it that the dancing girls (and boys) are coming back on the tables and bars of Chaoyang Street before the Autumn comes. We raise our glasses to the prospect!! Back To Top

"Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand and "lollipop" with your right.   (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?)

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.

There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous.
(You're not doubting this, are you?)

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious."
(Yes, admit it, you are going to say . a e i o u)

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. (All you typists are going to test this out)
