| Big-Tree's Views on Life in YantaiGeography and Landscape Name: Yantai 烟台, original name in Chinese called ‘the Smoking Platform?located in a corner of ‘the Jiao Dong peninsula?胶东半岛. It is said that the smoking suppose produced by burning of draught wolf s?manure to make it straiten raise up to send warning signal to the next smoking platform when enemy attacking. ‘Wolf smoking?狼烟, in Chinese means wars in former time. People believe in that draught wolf smoking can rise up very high and straight to let others to notice from far away. So it became the traditional way to send signal. There was a smoking platform in Yantai a couple of hundred years ago. This made name for this former little fisher village nearby the coast.. Location: ?/span>Jiao Dong?胶东, in Chinese means ‘the east side of the Jiao Lai river.?Jiao Lai river 胶莱河, is a big river connecting Jiao Zhou 胶州and Lai Zhou 莱州 in direction of N. W to S. E. Lai Zhou is a county- level small city belong to Yantai while Jiao Zhou is another county level small city belong to Qing Dao 青岛 200 Km in south east from Yantai. 60 Km from Yantai to east there is another city called Weihai which former time belong to Yantai. For its mild climate, Yantai supposed to be the most suitable place for human being to live. Mean temperature during the year is about 12.5 degrees with four seasons divided clearly. Highest temperature in summer can reach to 35 degrees and the lowest can be -15 degrees. Airlines connecting to the most of larger cities in China offers convenience for businessmen or tourists. Railway and highway makes travellers be able to move in any time. Disadvantage of Yantai, frankly speaking, is that it located in the corner of the peninsula. It seems too far away from the political, economic and cultural centres in China. If anyone from abroad would like to start business here, this should be one of factors taken into count. Landscape : Over 60% of territory in Yantai and in the peninsula is hilly areas with a lot of small hills. Farmers made terraced field throughout long history to grow crops such as maize, sweet potato, peanut, etc. there is no irrigation on these terraced fields. Farmer have to rely on natural rain fall for harvesting. There are some man made reservoirs in valleys mainly made in early 1950s in Mao’s time. If you fly over Yantai peninsula, you could overview the whole landscape get a impression of that there is very less trees left in this area. In some where on tops of the hill a few trees can be seen while in the terraced fields farmers have planted fruit crops in the last 20 years. Green colour only can be seen during growing season. While in winter, yellow or brown are the main colour covering the whole area gives you some deserted feeling if there is no any pine tree. Wild grasses used to be collected by local farmers to burn for cooking at home. Autumn is the busy season for them to collect grasses stored for the whole winter. Coals is expensive for farmers. Unless they need coals for heating in bitterly cold winter, normally they would not waste money for heating. Wild grasses also offers conditions for some small wild animals such as rabbits, wild chickens, birds, etc. . Magpies have problem to build up nestles on high trees, because of there is hardly any high tree left in the whole area. Big trees had been chopped down for making steel working in the great leap of 1958 called on by Chairman Mao. Crazy local citizens followed order of the great leader and cut off all of trees which have been existing for hundreds of years, including these huge trees surrounding their grave yards, all disappeared swept by the great political movement in 1958 and followed by the three years of famine in early 1960s. Now day people can see a funny thing along roads if they drive following a high volts power line. There will be a magpie nestle on top of each cement pole crossed with a hanger. Poor birds could not find a safer place to make their homes. Children would take these nestles for fire woods in former time. So magpies knew that the higher the safer their nestles could be. Mountain ranges: There are some big mountains in direction of east to west. Counting from east, the first one is ?b>Kun Yu Mountain?崑嵛山, over 900 meters above sea level and 50 Km long. Mt. Kun Yu has been famous for Taoism for hundreds of years. There is a temple on top of it attracting so many visitors annually. One of chief priests of the Kun Yu temple, 邱处机, later became military consultant of the Yuan Dynasty 元朝[1279 ?1368] and made great contribution for these Mongolian rulers. This made the Kun Yu temple even was more well known for the whole country. Now Kun Yu Mount already being the state owned forests area under strict protection. Trees, grasses are growing vigorously made the whole mountain wear green colour throughout the whole year. Water in streams certainly is clean and clear. Natural mineral water made boys and girls living near the mount grow handsome and beauty with faire skin and nice hairs. This is a place worth to come to have a look if anyone enjoy being close to nature and the traditional Chinese Taoism. Needless to mention that the priceless fresh air near the mount would attract more visitors to breath the clean atmosphere. Local food can be considered as typical ‘Jiao Dong Farmers Food? Climbing up the mount then see the temple, try to search some ancient stories, take some water from the stream and back to stay in farmers house for over night could be a special tour for strangers from other areas or over sea. From Kun Yu Mount to west there is a small mount called Ta Ding 塔顶, occupied by a military base defence the local area. This mount is only over 350 meters high but in a important position. There was an old temple in the north west valley built up in Tang Dynasty 唐朝, [618 ?907] named Ge Lu Si 葛庐寺. Unfortunately the temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in middle of 1960s left now only some frame walls made them into normal house used for storages by the local authority. Still there is a huge ginkgo tree lasting over one thousand of years keep alive watching this world. There were some old stories mentioned about the mount, the ginkgo tree and the temple. One of stories talking about the special location and mount ranges formed a special situation which these traditional geographers would consider that it could be one of the best cemetery places. People used to believe that if dead parents be buried in such a suitable site then descends could be well known officers or important figures in future. So in ancient China, rich people would spend large sum of money to invite these skilful geographers to help the family to search for a better family grave yard in order to make their children developing better in lives. Cemetery place always supposed to be the most important protected site for Chinese. This tradition was broken down in 1966 to 1976. but now it seems be recovered again. To further west from Ta Ding, there is Ya Shan in Chinese means Teeth Mount because of the two top peaks of the mount looks like two teeth.. Ya Shan is in height of over 900 meters in direction of east and west surrounded by many farmer villages. It supposed to be the roof of Yantai. In later part of Qing Dynasty 清朝[ 1644 ?1911], there was one of peasants repelling raised up. These peasants occupied the mount tried to against the government. This supposed to be the ‘easy to defence but hard to attack?situation. But the government troops surrounded them for months cut off food supplying. These rebels only have to fight for escape at last. All of them were killed and blood flowed follow a river reached to far away to a small pavilion. Later people gave a name for this place: Xue guan Ting血灌亭, in Chinese means ‘blood irrigated pavilion? Today there is no any pavilion any more but left only the name to let people thinking about the event had happened in history. Standing on top of the Ya Shan mount over viewing surrounding region, you could see the central part of Yantai. This is typical Yantai farmer’s country in hilly areas. Stone - made houses with a little square yard and a gate keep shut all the time. You could see that there should be a dog sitting in or out the house door keep watching their home. Chickens ,ducks or geese wondering everywhere to search for food .Not threshed maize ears drying in the Sunlight hanging on trees near house or in the home yard. Yellow colour decorating the family reflecting with more or less the same in ext door neighbours made the village full of life atmosphere. Farmers used to rear a pig in the yard or outside of the yard in a special stone made pig sty. They have pig mainly for accumulating compound fertilizer to feed their cropping land. Cats should be necessary for a farmer family to keep mice away. Now you can imagine that so many different kinds of animals being kept in one small home yard not only producing noises but also make the yard dirty with menue everywhere spreading odd smalls made some city dwellers, if they come for visiting, hard to breath. But local farmers are used to this kind of environment. They keep living there for many generations. They enjoy the fresh air, water, enjoy the feeling of closing to nature. Odd smells does no harm for them. Comparing with polluted air in cities they have much to be prided. There were a lot of stone mining near the mount because of stones took from this mount are very strong and solid good for constructing houses, bridges, or decorate steps, walls etc. . Ya Shan Stone already became special local production. To carry out land conservation policy, now day stone mining business have to be controlled. The roof of Yantai area should be well protected. No more stone would be allowed to cut from the mount. Ya Sha range continue goes to north west is a mountain named Ai Shan 艾山, about 800 meters high. The most important thing made Ai Shan well known is the hot spring nearby艾山汤. Local farmers used boil vegetables in the hot water and later on hot spring bathing service has been established. This attracts a lot of rich people to come enjoying the treatment of hot spring water. Doctors suggested that hot spring could cure many sicknesses and it is so good for health and so on. Restaurants and other services also like mushrooms rise up to draw more visitors to come. The mountain was not famous before besides the hot spring. But now day people take more care of their health. They would try many ways as they could to for health care. Driving from Ai Shan to further west there is another mountain called Luo Shan 罗山. Luo Shan is the last mount in west part of Yantai located in Zhao Yuan county where golden mining has been nominated for decades in China. There are quite number of rich farmers in this area by doing golden business. These rich farmers would have guns at home for self protection if allowed. Now it is not allowed to own weapon for private people, so they have to some other means for safe guard. They used to shut doors before Sun set. Nobody could let them open door in the evening. Golden mining is a special business and not everyone could manage it. Local people believe that treasure star has been fixed in the Destiny. Everybody has his own Destiny. One could not steal others treasure star. Treasure God supposed to be the most important God for local people. Actually from east to west in the peninsula, Kun Yu, Ta Ding, Ya Shan, Ai Shan, and Luo Shan are belong to the same range but not continue connected. The whole mountain range is being interrupted into several parts composed these individual mountains mentioned above. Rivers: Nearly all of rivers in the peninsula derived from these big mountain ranges. So these rivers all are in south ?north direction and definitely all run into the ocean in south and north. Where are mountains standing, there must be rivers flowing as we know by general knowledge. There are several rivers cut the land into vary parts and supplying water for irrigation or drinking. Jiao Dong peninsula is an area of lacking water resources. Ground water has been dropped in the last 30 years. All of these rivers have strange local names, such as Mu Zhu He母猪河, in Chinese female pig river, Wu Long He五龙河, in Chinese five dragons river, Da Gu Jia He大沽夹河, in Chinese clamping river, etc.. Brief history Yantai today means the area and rather than the city. Before 1987, Zhi Fu district, the downtown, called Yantai city. Now the Yantai city municipal government controls 5 districts, 5 county –level cities and a county of Chang Dao, in Chinese ‘the Long Island? Mr. Liu Zhen Nian 刘珍年, a general had ruled Yantai for some years during the civil war and the period of anti-Japanese war. He made cement roads etc. in the city and made the city better developed for marketing economy. Certainly wars had destroyed and postponed process of development of the city. Since 1949, Yantai starts its new life under the completely new system but has gone slowly. The first traffic light in the city: The first time for the city to install traffic lights for intercross on streets was in the end of 1970s. Local people had to take time to get used to the new system and slowly try to follow the order of traffic lights. Policemen even could not control people from continue rushing forward when the red light shining because of they were rush for working in the morning. A red light signal would make them later for working. They won’t wait for a couple of minutes till the green light tuned on. Time needed for the local people to take the new lessons. Gradually local citizens have adopted the new system and followed light signal and instruction of policemen on streets. To carry a baby on back seat of a bicycle while riding was not allowed before 1980s. Young mothers have to walk for a couple of kilometers pushed her bike and carrying her baby on backseats to work in early morning. Policemen considered that it is too dangerous to carry a baby on backs seat of a bike. So they would try to stop these women who offended this rule in the morning and fined them by locking their bikes on roadsides. In the reality it has been proved that there was not any baby fell down from back seat of a bicycle no matter riding or just pushing it on foot. The funny regulation lasted many years made young mothers in a terrible hard situation even they managed bought a bicycle. A bicycle before 1980s in Yantai was as luxurious as a car for time in 2006. Yantai Harbor: Yantai harbor started in the end of 19th century and railway built up in 1950 after Communist took over. Yantai harbor has been playing an important role in connection with outside of world especially to connect with another harbor city in north called Da Lian 大连, which was controlled by Japanese for some decades. The harbor made merchandise to be able to marketing their goods by ships. This made international trade possible. Before 1930s, Yantai already had become a marketing place for local farmers and fishermen. Many farmers would take their productions from their villages to the marketing sites for selling. Brought back whatever they need. Gun Platforms 炮台 : The Smoking Platform was set up in Ming Dynasty [ 1368 ?1644] to against possible invaders of Japanese. There were also some Gun platforms together with the smoking platform for defending. The gun platforms now showing to visitors serve as part of the brief historic record for local area. Early Contribution made by oversea settlers: Yantai being a city has only short history started since early stage of the 20th century. It was a small fisher village occupied by 13 families before the gate was opened by foreigners. After the Opium War in 1840, more foreigners came here to share a part of cake and settled down near the Yantai Hill. Slowly more houses were built up and even consular agents were set up. There are some old houses still can be seen now day near the beach with different styles of construction. In one time Yantai was a colonial place. Foreigners?arrival has made some contribution for Yantai. No matter how to evaluate, praise or criticize, it should be true. Take one of examples of fruit production, now day local people has been praising about Yantai apples, sweet cherries etc., they nearly forget who brought the first modern apples to Yantai. Luckily I had a chance to be the writer of historic recording book ?b>yantai apple production?in 1985. So I did some research on this and finally contributed my writing for the book. Before 1870, there was not any modern apple in Yantai area. The first person who introduced modern apples to Yantai was an American priest named Nevies. He came to Yantai with his wife worked for the church. At that time traditional Yantai apples were only these so called ‘crab apples?which were much smaller and not tasteful. Recognized the situation the priest couple brought ten apple varieties from America on their next trip to Yantai in 1871 and start their experiment. It had been proved to be success. So they soon established their own apple orchard in Yantai, the first modern apple orchard in China in the end of 19th century. The orchard had a name: ?b>the Foreigners?Garden?in Chinese ‘Guang Xing Guo Yuan?/span>广兴果园. Nevies couple had made an important test and contribution to Yantai regarding apple introduction. Bigger and more tasteful modern apples in Nevies?Foreigner’s Garden attracted local citizens and opened their eyes. A few years later, a man who worked for the Nevies secretly took some shoots from the introduced apple trees and brought back home to graft on his own trees. This man made American apples have been spread in Yantai since end of 1880s. In early 1910s, another businessman, Mr. Li Zaizhi李载之, he also was the chief of business promotion department in Yantai, had established his own apple orchard on the sandy soil in west part of Yantai. His attempting supposed to be the first commercial orchard to grow modern apples in this country. No sooner his orchard produced fruits than he exported apples to Hongkong some years later with a brand name of ‘Yantai Apples ?/span>烟台苹果. That should be where the name of Yantai Apple came from right from beginning. In ancient time: There was not much to mention about the little fisher village during time of the long history. Perhaps one of the most well known stories was the first Emperor in China, Qin Shi Huang, who had visited this peninsula for three times. Each time Qin Shi Huang had past this area even stopped in Zhi Fu on his way to the east corner of the peninsula. There are some more stories mentioned about is trip amongst local people. One story mentioned that Qing Shi Huang once had tried to shoot big fishes on Zhi Fu peninsula, So there was a fish shooting platform for him former time. Qin Shi Huang and Xu Fu 秦始皇, 徐福: Qing Shi Huang was fancied about long life secrets during his time. He had a lot of consultants for doing this. Actually these consultants were no more than wizards. He gave orders to his kingdom to search for the medicine which could make him live forever but none of any consultant could fulfill his wish. Some of them were killed. A wizard, Mr. Xu Fu, his home town was in Xu Fu town, Long Kou city 龙口市, belong to Yantai, about 110 Km from Yantai to west, once reported to the First Emperor that he could find the live-forever-medicine if only he would be granted 600 boys together the same number of girls, armed with ships, weapons and necessities. He would try to search for this medicine from the mysterious islands in the east ocean and would not be back if failed.. Nominated by the First Emperor, Xu Fu set out of his convoy trip brought along these boys and girls over the ocean to east and definitely settled down in a place now day called Japan. He never come back to the Qin Dynasty but established a new kingdom. Several Xu Fu’s temples could be seen in Japan and in China to remember his action 2200 years ago. Japanese consider that Xu Fu being their ancestor and worship him throughout their history. Visitor from oversea often would like to have a look of Mr. Xu Fu’s home country in Long Kou if the had a chance to come to Yantai. Yang Ma Dao养马岛: The horses reined island is about 25 Km from Yantai to east near the coast. It is said that Qin Shi Huang had his horses be reined on this place on his trip to east. Now day more visitors would come to see if there is any horse left by the First Emperor 2000 years ago. Peng Lai Pavilion蓬莱阁: Another famous site probably is Peng Lai Pavilion. Peng Lai was called Deng Zhou former time. A Pavilion has been constructed in Song Dynasty宋朝[960 ?1279] together with a small temple of Taoism and a light house for seamen. Because of Peng Lai supposed to be one the three most famous mysterious islands[ Peng Lai蓬莱, Ying Zhou瀛洲 and Fang Zhang方丈] which the First Emperor of China used to believe that life- medicines could be found from there, so Chinese used to consider it to be one of the most famous mysterious place for human being. If anyone had a chance come to visit this place he might be lucky to become an immortal and never would die and so on. Legends made Peng Lai well- known in this country and attract millions of tourists come to see the pavilion each year. There is a legend describe about the 8 immortals had crossed ocean and gone to another world from Peng Lai. No matter believe in it or not, more and more people would like to have a look. If you ever had a chance, you certainly would not miss it. Archaeological studying has been proved that Yantai peninsula seems as old as other areas in China. There were some tombs and remains of old architecture discovered and some old civilization evidences have been found. Because of its remote location be far away from any political center historic records hardly mentioned it. This should be the reason why there is less written form records could be seen today about this area. A General’s tomb: In beginning of the Tang Dynasty [618 ?907], the emperor Tang Tai Zhong, decided to conquer Korea. He had organized strong troops and tried for three times. Definitely he fulfilled his wish and took Korea as his territory. During the fought, one of his general named Tie Zhu, in Chinese means an Iron Pole. He died during a battle fighting near a mountain called Jin Gang Shan, in Chinese the Diamond Mount. People believe that he must die because of an iron pole is not as strong as the diamond mount. The Emperor made a huge tomb for the dead general by giving a special order to all of solders: each solder must put earth on his tomb. So the tomb was made by all of solder’s hands. The tomb was located in Qi Xia county where Ya Shan Mount located. Unfortunately the tomb now could not be found any more left only the story. Farmer’s lives and mentalities: In Past: Yantai farmers same like other Chinese farmers in other areas, are basically honest, hard working, saving, have simple lives, but never loose hope for future no matter how miserable life can be they still would keep their hopes for tomorrow. This character is so strong and made them be able to endure any hardship or torture. They could survive under any hard conditions as long as there is grass roots can be obtained for eating. They do not have coffee everyday. The most of them even never know what coffee taste like. They do not have butter for breakfast, no bread. Majority of them never sit on toilet but doing the conventional way. They used to the odd smell from toilet or animal manure. They used to bear their feet and take off clothes working in cropping fields. They would enjoy a lot if there is a small cup of alcoholic drinking available after hard working for the whole day. They used to start working before dawn and finishing after Sunset. They count time not by clock or watch but by the Sun and the Moon. They have their own lunar calendar from which they knew when to plough soil, when to sow and harvest. They used to living where they were born for all of lives and hardly travel over 100 Km away in lives. They known very well about their next door neighbors even their dogs and cats. They used to fetch water by shoulders from a deep well so they save water and never had hot bath at home before solar heating equipments being introduced. They used to light a little oil lamp before electricity be available. They are not often go to city for shopping, may be once or twice a year for preparing of children’s wedding. Pigs, chickens used to their larger part of additional family income because of labor working did not bring cash in hand. They used to put all of their hope on next generation by willing to invest as much as possible to support children to learn better in schools in order to find a chance to jump out from countryside to be no longer live as peasants.. They are mild, easy to be ruled, obey, sincere in believing the God and the Destiny. They would keep old tradition and customs, regular visiting relatives to maintain necessary connection according to local customs. They would regular worship ancestors if the government allowed. They would not have opposite sex friends because of sexual scandal suppose to be the dirtiest thing by old tradition. They would not interested in talking about political affairs simply because of it is too far away from them. They had no chance to change their registration as a peasant in remote countryside. So they had dream to come to cities to have a look or if be lucky, may be get a chance to stay in cities enjoying tap water, high buildings, department stores, cinema, wider and clean roads without much dust and there are buses to travel fast etc.. All of these for them was just a dream because of they were born as peasants and must have different lives. They had no idea where is America and where is UK and had no idea about the world. Former time some poor peasants would try to shift to north east part of China to start new hope. You could see many people originally came from Yantai in N.E. even still speaking the home dialect. Peasants are fear to be sick. Illness means bankrupt of family economy. Still over half of their family income is being spent on education of offspring. That should be background of Yantai farmers. Recent years: Time seems start changing since 1978. They were allowed to plant apple trees in their own fields but had to pay ‘the special economic crops tax?because of all fruit crops belong to special economic crops. They had no hope to be rich [ fortunately now they do not have to pay such tax]. Later they are allowed to be immigrated workers in construction sites in cities to earn some cash. Very often they could not receive payment in time [now the situation seems better]. Now they have electricity for light at home. Some families have a refrigerator, sewing machine, no longer use a donkey or by hand working to make maize flour or wheat flour by turning round the stone mills. Girls could have colorful clothes. Farmers could have watches to judge time now. Every household could have a TV to watch in the evening. Children in schools start learning English from the third year and some of them could have a computer at home if the Internet is being available in their village. Time has been changing. The new generation has better wish for future. Basically speaking Yantai farmers are friendly to visitors or gusts. They would offer whatever the best they could to entertain visitors if they consider that you are friends. They have only one way of thinking, one mentality to have peaceful lives and better end. A few farmers in countryside became rich benefited from the changing of system. Headmen of villages had better and more chances to go in advance. This is reasonable. To stay with Yantai farmers in their house, sleep on the traditional Kang made of bricks, light fire underneath to heat it in winter, could have typical farmer’s feeling. Now many city people would like to drive to countryside to taste farmer life. This already became a new fashion. The most part of Yantai actually, majority of Yantai citizens are living in villages. Only less people are living in downtown, somehow less than 10%. If any one would like to know whole China, he should go to countryside. Officers usually have two faces, two mentalities, two different lives in their working and at home. They would act officially in offices or in public to follow government order or policies, show power to weaker, holding privileges in hand, enjoy banquets and entertainments, smile to bosses to maintain better relationship, answer telephones of friends to keep social connection, try best to be promoted for higher positions. They look like really official. But after back home they would have totally different lives acting as real human being. They do all things human doing, cooking in kitchen and doing washing, clean floor, talking about money, enjoying with concubines or play with pet if they had one etc.. This is typical Chinese phenomenon. Foreigners should recognize this when deal with officers. City people: City people are more in marketing way or in business way. They are practical in different level compare with farmers. They are good in calculating costs and feedback. They have no land to grow anything for themselves and have to buy everything needed. They need cash all the time [ Farmers sometimes did not care about costs and return]. They have been trained to be good in investing and earning. Electricity, water, gas, rental, even throw rubbish they always have to pay. City toilets would charge some money. Nothing is being free to live in city. This made city people paying close attention on managing financially. They have to take care of their wallets. Recently housing became more expensive. They have to try best to make sure their son could have a shelter to get marry. Friendship and social circle in cities become more and more important than ever before. In the most of cases social relationship would bring benefits. In Chinese: relationship plus social position means productivity. If you want to do something properly you have to know the right persons. Without this there is hardly could anyone be success. This should be the number one policy for foreigners to enter China. Many foreigners who have been living in this country understand this very well. The better connection you have made with the important persons the easier and better result your business could achieve. This is the key. Friendship and social circle need to be maintained from time to time. This is another kind of investment. You need to invest not only money but also time. Many Chinese have to spend a lot of time with friends, bosses or their relatives in order to maintain proper connection for future. To invite these persons for lunch or for diner is a basic practicing. China is a country has a lot of restaurants, the most one in the world. Chinese is the most well known nation for eating. They really enjoy eating. In some way they are living for eating while people in western countries are eat for living. A luxury banquet will cost a fortune. The most expensive banquet in a five star hotel would cost over 20,000 Yuan[RMB]. In a city like Yantai, a luxury banquet would cost over 10,000 Yuan. Normal dinner will cost over 1,000 Yuan depends on what kind of drinks you ordered. Traditional alcoholic drinking such as ‘Mao Tai,?will cost 600 Yuan for one bottle and a bottle of imported wine will cost 0ver a thousand Yuan. Guests could judge how friendly the host be by simply have a look on what drink the host ordered and what dishes served on table. The more expensive the meal cost, the more attention the host have been paid to your coming. Remember, a normal worker’s monthly salary is only about 1,000 Yuan[RMB]. To cost his one month salary to invite some people for lunch or dinner, that means he really urgently need help from the persons he has invited. Nearly all of better hotels are busy in serve dinners everyday. That shows that there always are some people need help from others and, there are always some people could offer help for others. Here I have to point out that it is not easy to have a chance to invite an important person for dinner or lunch. These people have luxury food everyday and consider eating is a burden. One has to know someone first in order to make time arrangement. Now day marketing economy offers more and more means of entertainments: guests could be invited to have their hairs or feet to be washed in special place so called head-washing shop or feet washing shop, or doing massage etc. . of course sex service is reasonably available but in a secret way. Policemen would irregularly come to check up sexual services in hotels, feet-washing shops etc. according to the regulation if these sites fail to contribute anything. Foreigners to have a call-girl at night in a hotel have to be careful for two things: one should be hygiene. In spite of AIDS in Yantai is less known but it has to be seriously controlled including other kinds of sickness infected through sex touch. The second is: make sure pay the girl reasonably for her services to make her happy. By Chinese law, any woman had complained a man’s action, her words could be taken as evidence by the court for raping. Marketing economy have been taught local people how to offer better services to empty customer’s pockets. As long as you are willing to pay any service is being available. Chinese do pay a lot of attention on their reputation, in Chinese: taking care of their faces. City people even more so. They would live simple lives at home but try best to serve guests even they have to pay by themselves if it is really necessary. For instance, if a relative being ill and need an operation, the family normally should deliver a red envelop containing reasonable sum of money for the doctor, nurses who will take part of the operation next day [legally speaking this is forbidden but hardly anyone could change this tradition]. In this case, the patient’s family would act generously for seek of the patient’s life. If there is nothing to do with investing and benefits, city people would keep away from it no matter who is him or what a thing. Popular singers or film starts only could attract young fancies, neither for adults nor for elders. Believe or not, there are quite a number of people in city do not know their neighbors even they keep living as neighbors for many years. They hardly visit to each other and know nothing about neighbor’s kitchen or sitting room. This is very much different from farmers in countryside. Farmers would know every household in one village. When farmers shifted into city to live, they would have problem to get used to the city relationship amongst neighbors especially old people who living in villages for the most of their lives. City people are more selfish than farmers regarding to ‘public? They would keep their own home clean, but rarely would clean outside of their apartments even these stairs. They would not care of walking on grasses in a public park, would not care about if a tree fell down on road or a tap water running for months. That seems nothing to do with them in spite of they enjoy a lot from public. One typical phenomenon is how city people deal with their family rubbish bags. Many of them would just simply throw rubbish bags to where seems convenient for them and rarely bothered to think about these dust cleaners. So you can find many rubbish bags everywhere from the evening to before dawn. Some of city people who living upper stairs, say in 5th or 6th floors, used to take easy, just throw their rubbish bags from their windows and let the bags landed on streets. They save their own time but create working for others. As long they are convenient, that is all[ now this kind of act become less and less]. City people are not often go to church apart from some old citizens. They have no conception of the God or religious. They would not fear about to be punished after died in another world. They do not believe in ghosts or spirits. They are living in real substance world, more degrees of materialized. There are less churches in the city[fortunately there are some old churches being kept and not destroyed all]. Some retired people start to believe in God and attending to churches on Sunday. More and more retired people would like to have pets to keep themselves busy. They take care of the pets. Feed them well, wash them, take walking with them but do not want to pay the fees. Local government would charge 4000 Yuan for each dog to have a number. But few people did. The most of pets have not been registered as they should do. Very often somebody would walk on dog’s manure on walkways make shoes dirty. They would complain, but on the other hand, their digs at home might do the same thing. There is nobody takes care of dog’s manure on streets besides these dust men.. Farmers would try to sell their agricultural production in city. It is too expensive for them to rent a place in the supper markets. They have to sell on street sides. Get up in early morning rushed into city to try their luck. Former time these farmers was not allowed to sell vegetable or fruits in city. Now this policy has been changed. City offers good chances for them to market their production to make relatively better income. Actually government officers also need these farmers to sell vegetable everyday. Employers could give these officers everything for free, from electric kitchen ware to clothes, rice, everything they need could be offered by the government welfare. Still they need something fresh. City toilets will charge 0.3 Yuan for each time. There is a person take care of collecting toilet fees. This is a good paid job in spite of the name of profession, toilet keeper, is not be respected. 0.3 Yuan of toilet fee keep many people away from using public toilets toilet. Men would do it anywhere they want as long as there is not any woman watching. Where are some trees growing, where you could smell men’s easy private business. Public toilet does not really serve for the public. There seems something should be changed. There are more unemployment in city since the last 10 to 15 years. These unemployment were most workers in companies. Now companies belong to private owners. So former state masters now lost job and have to live in hard situation. If a couple both have no job, life can imagine. Young people are relatively easy to find a job. But some of them rather to be fed by their parents than to do a hard working to earn their own breads. Labor working does not make much money. Cheap labor offer more benefit to these joint venture companies. 500 Yuan is the minimum monthly salary for workers. Many workers have to do over time working in order to earn more income. In some companies, workers are being forced to work longer time to fulfill working task. Labor union is only a tool of the government and does not play real role to protect working class. There is nobody would be dare to analysis present society in this country. But there are certainly different classes in the reality as somebody described a few years ago: - the first class occupying political positions and deposit money in oversea accounts, - the second class wear special hats[judges, policemen, prosecutors etc.] and benefited from claimers and these be claimed. - the third class owning companies and even fees for paying call girls could be paid by the budget. - the fourth class holding an operation knife in hand and always will receive red envelops from patients?families. - the fifth class working in banks or insurance, wear clean shirts and be paid well. - The sixth class control power or water supplying and always being asked for helping. - the seventh class are scientists or teachers, they do hard working and cost low, last long. - The eighth class is drivers and made enough for surviving. - the ninth class is workers in factories, they are no longer master anyway. The tenth class is peasants in countryside to deal with the earth. Some of these should be just a joke, not really true, but shows something in real. More young people now have learned English in schools, but hardly could speak well when meet foreigners. To have a son in city would cost more than a son in countryside. Especially for the son to get marry. Parents have to prepare a house which will costs 3000 to 9000 Yuan per square meters depends on vary locations in the city. On wedding ceremony, parents of the newly married young couple would invite relatives, friends, former classmates to attend the wedding for eating a lunch in a restaurant. These people who come for the wedding will bring a ‘red envelop?containing 100 to 200 Yuan to be present. This kind of custom created big burden for some people. Wedding is a time to collect money from these who you know. Later on this debt must be returned year after year. These who have no younger child only have to loose and never hope it could be paid back.. Compare with a son, to have a daughter seems easier in the city. But majority of Chinese still wish to have a son even under the one child policy for birth control . Presents China is a country with highest frequency in sending and receiving presents in the world. Chinese enjoy a lot of in exchanging presents to each other and they also be burdened by presents in lives. There are countless reasons for giving presents to others. Older generation would give pocket money to younger during the Spring Festival morning when the younger showed their respect to them. The younger one should bring presents to older after a long distance trip. People in the same generation would exchange gifts when they feel it should be and so on. This is only in a family or in a family line among relatives. Presents can be a key to open boss?door for all of junior clerks in offices or in companies. It should be a normal practice for any employee to have better connection with bosses. But how? Presents play the most important role. Clever junior clerks would soon remember the bosses home address and know everything about the family. Careful study must be made about when, how, what presents would be the most efficiency and would bring the best result. Presents can be considered as seeds for success. Once sowed, the seeds will sure grow and then bear fruits. No seeds to be sowed there will be no fruits can be expected. China has been producing a lot of presents. Presents markets always being very active no matter in which season and which city, all are the same. Presents can be glue to make both parties closer. The more expensive the presents being, the glue would be more sticky and powerful. Chinese know this phenomenon for over thousands of years. There is a saying talking about this: ‘employ money to be the horse when one feels hard to go through a pass. Make wine to be solders when the general feels hard to win the battle.?If one need help from others, OK, prepare some presents. If one has some social positions or value could helpful for others, OK, his home must be full of vary kinds of presents. Everything valuable can be used as presents. Many years ago, a box of apples, a bag of rice, a pair of shoes for children, sweet candy, cloth, watch, cakes, wine, beer, kitchen stuffs etc. as long as it being useful, it will do when all of the society was in poverty. By time going, people’s income had become higher. Value of presents has been raised year by year. Motor bike, share of a company, shopping cards, cashes, checks, deposit books, cars, antiques, famous paintings, houses, apartments in China and in oversea, house service girls etc. all can be presents. Skillful arrangement sometimes must be made to make the deal done properly. Now day to offer a free holiday to oversea or to send somebody’s child to study in oversea countries with free of charge is already too cheap to be a present. Thinking about Chinese officers?salary is not very high. But lives they have been enjoyed and treasure they have owned could be thousands times more than that they should earn. Many people did not use their true names to deposit money in Banks some years ago. This made good chances for these present receivers. Later the government ordered Banks: everyone has to use true name in banks, but not these former depositors. The government would not dare to let all of money depositors to reveal their names, amount of money they owned and how they had earned etc.. This rule has protected large number of newly rich people in China. Otherwise millions of newly wealthy upper class people would have problems to declare how they made their huge money. Wise rich people would have accounts in oversea Banks. Recently the government started to control so called ‘commercial bribery?and ‘money washing? In this country, when the government try to control something, that means that the situation must be very serious, these earlier dealers had already earned enough and it could not harm the whole country. Majority of foreigners hardly realize this in this country when they first step their feet on this land. They need time to understand. When foreigners realized that why officers?faces were cold and the red seals were hard to get or took too long time to wait for the paper etc. in most of cases, that means they have not found where these officers?homes located. They have not gotten the keys to open these officers?doors. They have not sowed any seeds for future fruits. Remember, close relationship plus powerful social position could represent productivity. If one wants to stand his feet on this land he needs to know the right persons to build up necessary social web. It would save a lot of time, money and energy. The most efficiency investment in this country, right through the long history, is to invest in building up friendship and social connection. I guess this cold be true in any developing countries, only here might be more so. Foods Yantai is the place where Shan dong dishes originally initiated. Seafood supposed to be the best because of close to ocean. It is said that there was a cooker made Yantai dishes famous in Qing Dynasty: Once the Emperor ordered some cookers to cook the same dish with same materials in the palace. A cooker from Fushan district secretly took some dried spices made from a kind of special sea worm which in a little bag. He secretly put some of this powder into the dish he cooked during the competition. Certainly his dish was more tasteful than others. So the Emperor asked where he came from and praised Shandong dish should be the most delicious under the Qing’s sky. Soon more upper class people would try to taste Shandong dishes. This made Fusahn cookers well-known in and out of China. Chinese food supposed to be one of the most well known in the world. Foreigners really could enjoy a lot when come to China. No matter where you visit, local people would like to entertain guests to show their hospitality. Inviting foreigners for lunch or dinner also offers a chance for local officers to eat. Eating is the most important thing for most of Chinese. They are living for eating. Chinese are paying a lot of attention on eating. People would greet to each other when meet: ‘have you had your meal?rather than say ‘how are you? When foreigners are being invited for dinner, they had better to understand local dinner custom. One could judge how the host treats you during the dinner table. Further more, many important things are discussed during drinking and eating. Contract could be signed after drank but not before. That means foreigners should pay attention on eating to make better connection with local people, to be harmonious with them, at least not let local citizens feel that you dislike their custom and tradition. Time has been spent on eating is not wasted but on the contrary, in most of cases it worth. Eating and drinking is the best time for Chinese to make friends. To be friends first and business follows. That is typical Chinese way of doing things. If you are being considered as good friend or could be good friend in future, then everything could be easier. Otherwise costs must be more and time consuming. When you walk into the restaurant, the first host person [ normally is the bigger boss] would take the host seat towards to door. His right hand seat is the number one guest and the second guest should take his left hand seat.. Opposite the number one host is the second host [ he should be payer for the meal]. His right hand seat is the third guest and the fourth guest would sit on his left hand seat. Other seats are not so important. Meal started from drinking. Now day the host would ask guest what would you like to drink. Many years ago they did not ask, just fill up all of glasses with white spirit over 50%. The No.1 host would bring his first toast welcome guest for coming. Usually he will drink it up just in one time to show he is sincere and be honest to treat friends. He would make two times of toast and may, or may not, to serve for you by taking food to guest’s dishes. In larger hotel, serving girl would help to share food to everyone, but small restaurant may not offer such service. During the eating everyone could use his chopsticks to touch any dish you like. Better restaurant would serve additional spoons or chopsticks for sharing food. Even could put your spoon into the soup bowl to take soup. In better hotel, soup should be shared into everyone’s bowl. After the first host’s two toasts, the second hot would make the same two times of toasts. The interpreter will have to translate. It should be the number one guest’s tune to bring his toast after the two hosts finishing their duties. Then the second guest could make his toast if he like. Following should the third and the fourth one. This should be the normal procedure. Foreigners could ask for folk and knife if you feel hard to use chopstick. Chinese would praise if foreigners could handle chopstick properly. Chinese would try to let foreigners to drink as much as possible. They would try to create many reasons for drinking. They are professional drinkers. Be careful Chinese drinking. Many foreigners consider themselves have big drinking capacity but may loose during the Chinese banquet. Foreigners who visited China normally have better table manner as they have been educated while growing up. There is hardly anyone did anything wrong or to be un-polite during eating. Go to Roma, just behavior as Roman do. Festivals and local Customs The Spring Festival春节: this festival supposed to be the most important one for all of Chinese, especially the HAN people. The date is according to the Lunar Calendar: the first day of the Lunar year. This also being called ‘Chinese New Year?or ‘the Lunar Year?/span>阴历年 . Spring Festival seems like Christmas for people in the west. People would return home to meet all of family members, have better foods and change new clothes on etc.. Children like it the most. Older people might think in different way. They might consider that the Spring Festival for them means another one year older. Before the Spring Festival should be the time for everyone to pay off their debts. For companies it should be the time to collect money back to balance the account. Children would keep awake through out the New Year Eve waiting for the new day to come. This is so called ‘Night Watching?to notice the midnight passing. As soon as the midnight past, children would start to burn fire cracks or vary kinds of fireworks. Noise and powder smoking would soon be full of the whole atmosphere left ground full of pieces of paper and remains of these fireworks. After made the terrible noise children would go to visit each of their older generation to show a new- year respect, in Chinese this is called ‘Bai Nian?/span>拜年, worship of the new year, in order to collect some pocket money. This is the most enjoyable thing for children. Their pockets would be full of candy, red envelops contain some money which originally supposed to make the children’s waist stronger. In former time, younger generations should ‘Koutou?/span>叩头 to the older. But now hardly anyone keeps the old tradition after ‘the Cultural Revolution?in 1966 to 1976. Whenever one meets another on street, they would greet to each other say ‘happy new year? Before dawn streets already is being full of people wearing new clothes busy visiting their close relatives. Sons and daughter- in- law would bring their children to join with parents to eat early breakfast with parents of the husbands. Typical breakfast should be ‘Jiao Zi?/span>饺子, [dumplings] made of wheat flour wrapped inside vegetable and meat. Older people would light incense to worship their dead ancestors. In some dumplings a few coins and red Chinese dates would be wrapped in. if anyone being lucky to pick up these special dumplings, that means he/she would have better luck in the New Year. This tradition has been lasting for thousand of years. But now day children follow it just to make more fun. They would ask mother to do if parents forget. Noise of fire cracks can be heard during the whole day as some children would be too excited and forget sleeping for whole day and night. These litters left on ground supposed not to be cleaned in three days. So you never could see anyone try to clean yard or outside ground during the first three days of Spring Festival. In countryside if where is no tap water available, farmers used to fetch enough water before the New Year Eve. No anyone would go to a well to fetch water in the first three days of the New Year. In somewhere, before sunset of the New Year’s Eve, farmers would go to the graveyards to invite their dead ancestors back home to celebrate the New Year. This is just a ceremony. On the third day of the New Year, they should send their dead ancestors to go back to the cemetery places. But in Yantai, there is rare farmers doing this now. Farmer would prepare a lot of foods before the Spring Festival. They would steam big breads decorated with pieces of red Chinese dates or other colorful decoration, in Chinese called ‘Bo bo? can be as heavy as one Kg or two. 30 years ago this was used to be presents when visiting relatives. Visiting relatives should be the main task in following days. Men would have a better chance to drink and children would be happy to receive further pocket money. Even pets or pigs would be treated better than normal days. The Lantern Festival : 15 days after the Spring Festival when the Moon being in full supposed to be the Lantern Festival or sweet- dumpling festival, in Chinese called ‘Yuan Xiao Jie? On this evening, people should eat sweet dumplings元宵, round shaped white ball wrapped inside with sweet ingredients taste different with the traditional dumplings. People would make lanterns and hang them out side of house or inside. Farmers would make small lamps holding some oil and take to the graveyard to light the lamps for their dead ancestors to catch fleas by the light. In cities, now day people would make different kinds of big lanterns decorate the streets, parks or rivers. The Dragons?Day: by the lunar calendar, the second day of the second month is called ‘the Dragons Day? On this day dragons and snakes would raise their head up and be awaken from winter dominance. Mother would suggest children from this day not go to somewhere snakes supposed to hide in case danger. Special food may be prepared in farmer’s houses. Housewives would roast some flour pieces for Chinese on this day. The Goddess?Birthday: the third day of the third month by farmer calendar supposed to be the birthday of the Goddess, wife of the God. In some where people may have a special big marketing day. Recently this festival has been slowly become declined. Shortly after this day, there will be a special day for people to visit the cemetery places to show respect to dead ancestors. This day called ‘Qing Ming Festival?/span>清明节. People would burn yellow paper and incense for worshipping and, would put some paper on the tombs means to help the dead ancestors to change clothes. The Dragon Boat Festival: the fifth day of the fifth month by farmer calendar. This festival mainly be celebrated in south China while in north, people just have special food, such as ‘Zong Zi? sticky rice wrapped by reeds leaves and eggs. This festival originally was set to remember a former honest scholar named Qu Yuan 屈原who drawn himself to show his righteous in disagree of the emperor during his time. The Rain Festival: the sixth day of the sixth month by farmer calendar. This festival may be only had been celebrated in Yantai area. On this day, mothers would use newly harvested wheat flour to make steamed flour frogs for children to celebrate new harvesting of the year. >From this time, raining season will start. The Lover’s Day [ or so called the cowboy and spinning girl’s day]: this festival is originally derived from a legend: the seventh daughter, a spinning girl, of the God made her own decision of got married a cowboy and had two children, they lived happily. But her action had offended the Heaven Rules. So the God sent some guys to take her back to the Heaven. The cowboy run after them carried his two babies on two baskets. Just nearly he reached his wife, the Goddess had drawn a line with one of her hairpins and immediately the line has become a big river between the couple in the sky. This line is the Milk Way, in Chinese called?tian he?/span>天河 . Mother used to show children in summer some stars in sky near the Milk Way to explain which one supposed to be the spinning girl and which one should be he poor cowboy and his two babies near by. Moved by their sincere love, the God would later permit this couple to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. People believe that all of magpies would go to the Heaven on this day to make a bridge on ‘the Heaven River?for the couple to meet to each other. So this day also can be mentioned as ‘the magpie bridge day? Magpie bridge now day in Chinese can mean matchmaker, to bring lovers together. In the evening of this day, girls would secretly hide under a canopy of grape vine try to listen to possible conversation of the cowboy and spinning girl in sky to learn cleverness from the spinning girl in the Heaven. Mothers in this area would roast special shaped small cakes named ‘Clever Cakes?/span>巧果 for children. The Middle Autumn Festival: 15th of the eighth month by farmer calendar when the Moon is being full. This should be the second important festival for all of Chinese. It is time for family members to meet together to be reunited sitting around at home as a full Moon. Moon cake supposed to be symbolizing the festival. Companies would produce many different kinds of moon cakes, not for eating but for being used as presents. This is another important time for submitting presents. A high rank officer once summarized that traffic jam in Beijing during this time mainly cause by people in busy sending presents. Many people would come from all over of China to the capital to make their contribution to these people they have to pray for before this festival. This would cause millions of cars rushed to the capital in short time and doubtless would bring traffic into jam in Beijing. The Old Men’s Day: ninth of the ninth month by farmer calendar. This is a time for people to climb mountains and to have a far sight watching. Chrysanthemum flowers should be the best decoration for this season. The Second time visiting the graveyard: the first day of the tenth month by farmer calendar. This is the second time to show respect to the dead ancestors in the cemetery places. People would do the same as the first time in spring to burn yellow paper, incense and put some paper on the tombs means to change winter warmer clothes for ancestors etc.. Ash of these burnt yellow paper supposed to be currency in another world. It is always very dangerous to burn paper in spring and in autumn in open sites because f it is easy to cause fire setting. It had happened. But people still would take risk to follow the old tradition. Tradition has been formed through long history and hardly could be changed in one generation. The government had tried so hard to let people do not do it or try different ways. But it did not work. Even officers themselves would do it secretly. Everybody has his dead ancestors to be respected unless he/she is not a Chinese descendant. No. 8 of the last month: on this day people used to cook porridge and clean houses for the coming Spring Festival. The little Spring Festival: 23th of the last month of lunar calendar and only 7 days before the biggest festival for Chinese. Besides these civil festivals there are other public festivals: the May 1st, the National Holiday on Oct.1st and the New Years Day. Even the East and the Thanks giving Day also attract young generation. Recently Christmas has become popular in China. Young people would like to follow new fashion and businessmen would like to take advantage of business opportunity. People also would be happy to have another chance to contribute presents to these powerful social figures. Women Yantai Women Used To Be Better Housewives: Like in any other countries women have been playing an important role both in social and family lives. Chinese women are even being more important for families. They not only are taking care of households but also have to work: to get a job as professional women doing or to work in fields as many farmers?wives in countryside. Family life occupy the most of their spare time after daily working. Men in this aspect seem very different from women. Men could have more friends while women, will have less and less social contact after getting married. By Chinese tradition, men suppose to spend more time and energy outside of home while women should keep staying at home. This made Chinese women more home-relying especially when they have babies. Chinese women, majority in Yantai peninsula, had hard lives specially these women born before 1970s. They have tasted harsh and simple lives under poor conditions with very little family income. From now back to 30 years, life in countryside was very much different from today. That generation really knew what life means. Life for them was to spend time rather to enjoy. They had no any idea about enjoying. All they knew was to struggle for have enough to eat to keep alive. That was all. No TV, no radio, no car, even no bike, no watch, no sewing machine, no hot shower. Women only could take a cool bath in summer evening in a river during a year round after the most of people fell asleep. Women had no toilet paper for their period. No shampoo for washing hairs, no beautiful clothes, even no leather shoes. These women now are round about 40 years old or little bit older. They are faithful to husbands and families, hard working, saving and never would waste anything. They are easy to be satisfied and no additional wish besides basic living conditions. They have been perfect housewives and skillful in managing families affairs under any harsh condition. They have been taught by parents and grandparents how to behave as a woman: to be cute daughter when little, to be nice girl when growing up, to be reliable wife after married, kind mother when having baby and good grandmother when getting old. The old Confucius philosophy about women’s behavior has been playing role in reining women’s mentality and action throughout their live process. Hardly there was any love- affair happened in countryside because of an affair for Chinese suppose to ruin their family reputation and made parents lose faces. Chinese women are kind with soft hearts, mild as lambs. They have strict self discipline ruling their own act and being sweet-hearted in helping others when need. Kindness has always been tied together with weakness. This is true everywhere in the world. There were many people in western countries would like to look for house servant women from Philippine. I wonder why there is nobody ever try to employ a woman from Yantai area? I guess one of reasons might be the language since the most of women over 40 years old do not speak English. But language could be learnt. Divorce rate: the rate of separate and divorce has been rising dramatically in the last 20 years for many reasons. Women now day try to involve more social lives than before and more women try to get a job for self- independence. They try to learn what they want to know, to follow new fashion, even to establish new businesses under their own control. Chinese women are hard learners and hard workers are being able to develop themselves if conditions are available. Many women try to marry foreigners if they had opportunity. There were some successful examples. They cherish what the God has granted to them. The only obstruct for them to know outside of the world is language. They could learn if one day a channel being set up. Labor Resources Professional education and training has been well developed and paid great attention in Yantai city. There are some professional colleges and schools play its roles. These professional institutions supplying qualified technical workers in close cooperating with local industries. There are four main industries in Yantai: automobile, IT, clothing and gold- mining. There is a winery factory established 100 years ago, the oldest one in China. Yantai beer is not so famous but good enough for local people. Labor cost is relatively lower and sufficient. Yantai The college is a newly proved professional college based on former Yantai Automobile Industrial School [ YAS] with 400 teaching staffs and 8,200 students. This is the unique one automobile college in Shandong province. This college is close cooperate with local administration for employment in setting up FuShan district labor market in the Campus to offer professional training. In cooperation with other vocational schools locally and with these industries, the college has founded ‘the Yantai Automobile Professional Association?for supplying qualified blue- collar workers. The college also has been cooperated with other provinces such as: Qing Hai, Ning Xia, Inner Mongolia and Hei liong Jiang provinces regarding professional education and training. For international cooperation, the college has been started working with some institutions in Federal Republic Germany to run two majors for automobile technology. The college is looking for more opportunities in cooperation with other oversea institutions for professional education and training. This moment this college is preparing to construct a new campus and a training center. Any oversea institution is being welcomed to come for visiting and for negotiating of possible cooperation. Investing Possibilities There are several fields could be thought about to develop new businesses: - Education and training. Chinese have been paying close attention on their children’s education. This tradition has been lasting over thousand of years. If you could do it well the potential could be huge. - IT industry. There are already some big IT industries set up factories here and proved successful. - Port industry and ship building. - Construction materials. Cement, lime, stone mining etc. all can be profitable. - Clothing industry. - Shoes making. - Fruits industry and vegetable. Production, processing and trading. - Seafood. Production, processing and trading. - Real estate. Prices of Houses in Yantai still are being lower compare with other coast cities in China. It is not too hard to predict the big potential in coming future. - Travel agency. There is no perfect travel agency here could offer the best services for tourists. Local people need to learn. - Nursery business. Yantai is a well known fruits producing area in this country. But there is no any high level nurseryman offering better quality planting materials to fruit farmers.
