Yantai Hill
Located in the north part of the city, Yantai Hill, with its "Yantai Stone" Lighthouse has become the symbol of Yantai. From its 53 meters summit, there is an impressive view of the sea, mountains, city sky-line and large ships cruising in and out out of Yantai Port. Yantai Hill is unique in China as a site of natural beauty, architectural and historical significance. It's first mention in history was during the Ming Dynasty when a smoke beacon was built here in order to warn pirates and foreign forces. The name "Yantai" (烟台) in Chinese literally means "Smoke() Platform ()". The main attractions at Yantai Hill Park include the Lighthouse, Revolutionary Martyrs' Cenopath, Stone Boat, Relang Pavilion, Guanhai Pavilion, Smoke Platform, Water King Temple and the former foreign embassies. In 1862, Yantai opened to the outside world and 16 countries built embassies, churches and post offices on the hill before the 1940s. Since 1979, the local government has invested much to rebuild the hill and Yantai Hill Park was founded in 1988 and is about 11.6 hectares in area. The park is unusually peaceful, clean and quiet, and on the north-west side of the hill, kids and adults alike can go rock-pooling and fishing.

Binhai Square
Between Yantai Hill and Number 1 Beach is the Binhai Square, which is a pedestrian walkway beside the sea. This is a great place to stretch your legs and fill your lungs with the fresh sea air. The Boulevard revelers include roller-bladers, joggers, street-vendors, and fishermen. You can even get a an accu-pressure massage on the sidewalk from Traditional Chinese Masseurs! The sea in Yantai is usually calm, but when the north winds blow the crashing waves splash sea-spray over unsuspecting romantic couples. Alongside the boulevard there is a special area with dozens of restored old houses. In many ways this area is more impressive than Xintiandi, Shanghai's posh bar area with restored stone-framed buildings, not only because there are more old houses of varied styles, but also some narrow alleys that offer an ocean view. It is quiet now, with few visitors, but In one or two years, it is likely to become one of the most trendy places for locals and tourists.

Yantai Beaches
There are at least four beautiful sandy beaches for sun-bathing and swimming in Yantai City. These are located beside Yantai Hill, Yantai Oriental Hotel, Yantai University and Yantai Development Zone. The nicest of these is the "Golden Beach"
in the north of the Yantai Development Zone, with 40 hectares of white sand and 60 hectares of forest and clear blue waters. Some of the cleanest and clearest seas in China are located here. Every April, thousands of Sakoya Cherry trees in the parks and along the foot-paths and open to full blossom filling the air with the scent of the spring.

Ta-Shan Mountain
Just 10 minutes taxi ride from Yantai Hill to the south of Yantai, is the towering Ta Mountain, whose steep slopes up to the peak can be reached on foot or by cable-car. The views from the peak-top "Sanhe Pagoda" are breathtaking. The Taiping Temple, the Sanhe Pagoda, the Longwang Palace, the Belfry, the Guanyin Pavilion, and the Guanyin Apex are all worth the visit. The pagoda itself is an ancient and well-preserved monument with wall-paintings and fortune-telling monks for those who are so inclined. And near the base of Ta Mountain is an amusement park with metal toboggan-run and fun-rides for all the family. Tashan Amusement Park is situated in Southern Yantai. At the top of the park is a pagoda from which Mountain Ta got its name. Its natural beauty, abundant religious and folk cultures, and convenient transportation have attracted lots of visitors. It has now become a comprehensive scenic spot incorporating sightseeing, amusement, and religious activities. The amusement area includes European-style gates, a defence education building, a children's amusement park, a tropical rain forest building, a crocodile building, and little animal village.

Changyu Winery
Walking north along the No.1 bathing beach, the Changyu Wine Culture Museum is a must see. It rivals the wine museums of Napa, California. The century-old cellar is a highlight with gigantic oak barrels (15,000 litres) standing in the tunnel, still used by the Changyu Winery, the largest in China. Yantai Changyu Winery was established in 1892. The Winery mainly produces brandy, red wine and Vermouth including more than 60 varieties, 4 series of wines. Day trips to the Changyu vineyard, about 1 hour  to the west of Yantai are well worth the while, especially during the grape harvest which happens between September and October.

Nanshan Park
15 minutes walk to the south of Yantai Hill, set in the foothills of Ta-Shan (Ta Mountain), is charming Nanshan Park, complete with a boating lake, amusement park, zoo, lion and tiger patting for adventurous kids, and a sealion acrobatic display show. On weekends and holidays the pathways are sometimes filled with thousands of potted flowers such as dahlias, and Chinese snacks can be chomped along the way. A pleasant day-out in this city of surprises.

Yantai Museum
The Yantai museum building was originally a guild hall. It was built in the Qing Dynasty by foreign merchants and ship-owners of Fujian Province . In 1858, it became the Yantai Museum. It houses exquisite carvings. The beams of the entrance hall are in the shape of a woman lying on her side nursing a baby and the eaves feature Arab figures playing musical instruments. There are also lively drawings of scenes of old Chinese stories, such as the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea (Baxian guohai ), the defeated but faithful Han General Suwu who was punished had to live as a shepherd for nineteen years (Suwu muyang ) and some scenes taken from the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo yanyi ). The museum houses rich collection of articles and documents recording every aspect of the history of Yantai.

 East Battery
The East Battery (Dong Paotai), is about 1 mile north along the coast from Number 1 bathing beach. Three formidable Krupp cannons, built in 1893, tower over the bastion. The fortification was designed by a German invited by the Qing Imperial Court. The East Battery Hill is surrounded by ocean on three sides. The coastline turns serpentine, cliff precipitous and the water is so clear that half-submerged rocks and pebbles in the shallow seabed can be seen clearly. The rooms in the battery contain a wonderful collection of artifacts that take you back to the old days and teach you a bitter lesson from the Sino-Japanese War in the mid-1890s.

Kong Tong Dao ("Empty Island")
The name of the island sounds similar to "Dinosaur Island" so some visitors go searching for fossils. However, the correct translation is "Empty Island", which is close to the truth. The 20-minute boat-trip is fun, navigating through fishing nets at high-speed and costs a few hundred RMB to commandeer the boat which seats 8 to 10 people. Upon arrival on the island the "Park Warden" will show up to sell you a ticket. The ticket control is bizarre but very cheap and worth the few RMB to go to the entertainment park on the adjoining island that must be reached via another boat-ride. The island has nice empty beaches, with abundant sea-life, rock-pools, crabs, fish and seashells galore on the seashore. The fishing village can smell a bit "ripe" in the summer heat when the temperatures get up in the low 30's. Take sun-screen and a clothes-peg for your nose if you are there on a sunny day!

Longkou Cliffs
These are among some of the steepest cliffs we have ever seen. Vertical to be more accurate. Beautiful coast-line, with little industry or building development, although the Longkou Seaport will be established in the near future so you had better come to see them before the inevitable take place.

Weihai Coastline
OK, so we admit, Weihai is another city, but it is only 1.5 hours drive from downtown Yantai, so within easy striking distance by taxi for about 200 RMB. And it is definitely worth the effort. Spectacular coast-line with little to no traffic even on public holidays!

Yantai West Seaport
The site for the future Yantai West Seaport is a stretch of beautiful coast-line with sweeping hills and cliffs that give way to a beach which is currently a fishing village. In the near future this site will be developed as the Yantai's West Seaport and there are ambitious plans for this to be a hub to compete with Qingdao Seaport over the next decade. Hopefully some of this coastline's natural beauty and environment will be preserved during the economic development for this community.
