Track work begins on Beijing-Shanghai link
Construction workers on Monday began laying tracks for
a high-speed railway linking Beijing and Shanghai, the Ministry of Railways
said.
The ministry's Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway construction headquarters
held a ceremony in Xuzhou city, East China's Jiangsu province, to mark the
start of the track-laying process.
The headquarters said the 1,318-km track will be completed by the end of the
year.
The 220.9-billion-yuan ($32.5 billion) railway line, which began
construction in 2008, is scheduled to start operation in 2012.
The line will span three municipalities - Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai -
and pass through Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, the ministry
said.
Twenty-one stations will be set along the line, which will also connect the
Bohai Sea Rim and the Yangtze River Delta, two major economic zones in the
country.
Nearly a quarter of the country's population resides around the railway
line, the ministry said.
According to earlier reports, the operating speed of the railway is expected
to be 350 km per hour, with a maximum speed of 380 km per hour.
The average commercial speed between Beijing and Shanghai will be 330 km per
hour.
Once completed, the line will cut the travel time between Beijing and
Shanghai by more than half to less than five hours.
More than 1,060 km, or 80.5 percent of the line, will be laid on 244
bridges.
The 164 km viaduct between Danyang and Kunshan in Jiangsu province will be
one of the longest bridges in the world.
The line will also include 22 tunnels, totaling 16.1 km, according to
ministry officials.
With the completion of this line, by 2012 China will have a railway network
of 110,000 km, 13,000 km of which will be high-speed rail, the ministry
said.
The ministry has predicted that an estimated 220,000 passengers will use the
trains each day, almost doubling the current capacity, while the annual
passenger capacity of the line is estimated to be 160 million.
While the project is a work of cutting-edge technology and has a host of top
Chinese railway technicians working on it, some experts remain concerned
about the line's operational safety due to its high speed.
"It is theoretically possible that some unpredictable safety problems may
arise with the increase in speed," said Yang Hao, a professor at the school
of traffic and transportation, Beijing Jiaotong University. "But I'm
convinced that China's railway technology and construction capabilities are
mature enough and reliable."
Zhao Jian, a professor at the school of economics and management at the same
university, said he is not satisfied with the energy consumption and
profitability of the railway line.
"I doubt the new railway will return the government's investment anytime
soon, since it is inclined to become an energy-consuming line. The fare may
also be expensive and unaffordable to many ordinary commuters," he said.

real cost of being single: Going it alone costs £250,000

no spouse to entertain or children to clothe and feed, those who live alone
may think they got off without the most costly responsibilities.
But bachelors and spinsters - or 'freemales' as single women are now often
called - might wish to reconsider the price of going it alone.
Those who live by themselves spend £250,000 more on basic essentials over a
lifetime than those who live with a partner - and they are less happy for
it, research suggests.
Almost three in ten households in the UK are formed by a single person and
the number is set to rocket to 9.5million in the next ten years.
And with no partner with whom to split the burden of bills, single people
spend an average of almost £12,000 every year on expenses such as housing
costs and food - around half of the £23,961 average annual income.
This is almost £5,000 more than the amount spent by those living as part of
a couple.
And the study of 2,000 adults found that the cost of single life is not just
financial - those in couples are happier.
Almost two thirds of those who live with a partner say they are better off
as a couple, whereas just one in five single people think they have the
better deal.
The findings show it is increasingly difficult to sustain good quality
living on a single salary, according to the price comparison service that
commissioned the research.
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch. com, said: 'The huge
increase in the number of single-person households is not just a worry in
terms of housing stock, it will also have a serious impact on lifestyle and
spending.
'Increasingly, we are seeing evidence that to enjoy a good quality of life
in Britain, a household needs two incomes.'

The Third Yantai International Wine Festival The Third Yantai International Wine Festival will be held during September 23 to September 29 in Yantai International Conference Center. Its aims are spreading culture and promoting cooperation. Many corporations will dispatch representatives to attend the festival. Different kinds of wines will be showed in this festival, such as grape wines, fruit wines, and proto-wines. The wine-making technology and equipment, bottling, storing and packaging technology and equipment will also be displayed.
The Third Yantai International Wine Festival fall into three parts, including more than 20 activities. The Mysterious Yantai New Train Station Will Be Unveiled Splendid Gate of City Overlook the Gate of City A Sign in the Train Station Yantai new train station has come into acceptance phase by the train department. The Yantai Martial Art Competition 8th August 2009 Shandong is famous for being the ancestral home for Northern Praying Mantis kung fu and the people here in Yantai are very proud of their own association with this very deadly fighting art. Yantai has in fact produced some of histories greatest Northern Praying Mantis practitioners and its popularity remains today. Each year Yantai hosts its own Martial Arts Competition over five days and the next competition begins on the 7th of August 2009. This years competition will be even bigger than last years and will be packed with events, demonstrations and even an international Sanda and Taekwondo competition. The Martial Arts Competition will involve all age groups from the under thirteens to the over sixties and will include a strong contingent of western martial artists from the local kung fu schools. Some of the styles you are likely to see at the event include Bagua, Northern Praying Mantis, Shaolin, Tai Chi, Tong Bei, and Xingyi. Contestants will perform both weapons and fist forms both traditional and modern and this years highlight will be the international Sanda and Taekwondo tournament as well as the traditional fist forms, weapons forms and wushu demonstrations. For all those who do not know Sanda is Chinese Kickboxing so those into MMA or kick boxing are in for a treat if they make it out to the event scheduled to take place in Kunyu Shan Shaolin Martial Arts School. Unfortunately all events at this competition are closed to the general public and only competitors, organisers, invited guest and members of the Tanglangquan Association should attend. Yantai University 2009 Summer English Workshop Yantai University celebrated its 20th Summer English Workshop with a dynamic Opening Ceremony on July 20, 2009. Almost 350 students, teachers, teaching assistances and university officials were treated to a performance on drums by Changyuetuan ( a band) , singing by Liu Yuqin, danced b Zhao Gang and John Denver. Country Road sung by Americans Lisa Davis and Zack Phillips. Morning classes begin immediately after the Opening Ceremony. The workshop is three weeks long and ends on August 7. Seventeen Americans from Georgia and Tennessee are teaching and leading evening activities. Classes in the morning are from 8:30 to 11:30 am, then the foreign teacher take workshop students to lunch. At 2:30 pm, all the students assemble in one of two lecture halls for afternoon lectures covering a wide range of topics about American culture and life. Then at 3:30, students have an opportunity for an hour to ask questions of the American teachers during free talk. A variety of evening activities are offered during the workshop, including dancing, relay races, scavenger hunt, game nights, sports nights, a mock American wedding, and a watermelon picnic. The workshop is an excellent opportunity for those who want to practice speaking English, improve their listening comprehension, and interact extensively with American teachers who have a love for China and the Chinese people. The workshop is academically rigorous, but in a friendly and fun-filled atmosphere.
Yantai Airport Under-Water (The Shanghaist - August 15th 2007) August 15th 2007, Shandong Province's Yantai Airport was completely overwhelmed by floods -- the greatest it has ever seen -- and was forced to shut down. 45 flights were either cancelled or postponed. Heavy rains started at about 5am in the morning and within half an hour, the waters had risen to about 0.5 metre. 25 staff pushed this aeroplane -- yes, you heard that right -- to safe ground. The departure hall of the airport was also completely flooded, and staff had to be deployed to use sandbags to protect the cargo area. 

Singapore-listed personal computer maker and distributor IPC Corporation is making further inroads into property development in China.
Its subsidiary Zhuhai IPC Property Development is planning to develop a commercial and residential project in Yantai City.
The project will be undertaken with Yantai City's Laishan District's Dongbozi Enterprise.
Dongbozi will provide two parcels of land totalling about 750,000 square metres for the project.
The development is expected to yield about 1.4 million square metres of gross floor area.
Zhuhai IPC will be responsible for the overall planning and development as well as construction and marketing of the project.
It will also provide an initial cash funding of up to 70 million renminbi, or S$14 million, from internal resources.
Dongbozi will be allocated up to 40 percent of the floor area of the commercial development and 30 percent of the residential development.
The remaining development will go to Zhuhai IPC.
The project will be carried out in phases and the entire project is likely to take more than five years to complete

YANTAI Rising Dragon International Container Terminals (YRDICT), a partly-owned unit of Manila-based port operator International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), has taken over the Yantai Gangtong Container Terminal in Shandong province.
YRDICT, a joint venture company with ICTSI (Hong Kong), Yantai Port Group Co. and SDIC Communications Co., had started management and operation of the Yantai Gangtong Container Terminal on April 1, a statement from ICTSI said.
The YRDICT terminal has two container berths, with a wharf line of 730 metres and a depth of 14 metres. The yard and container freight station has an area of 280,000 square metres including a 4,500-square metre warehouse. It has a total annual capacity of over 900,000 TEUs. Cargo handling equipment includes six post-Panamax quay cranes and 12 rubber-tyred gantries.
The hi-tech terminal uses a container information system consisting of various sub-systems in stowage management, real-time port operation control, yard planning, container freight station management, statistics inquiry and billing.
By Amy Wang, Contributing Writer -- Electronic Business, 7/10/2007Skyrocketing labor costs in China's largest cities are pushing manufacturing out to the less-developed areas, threatening the economies of tier-one cities and creating massive shifts inside of China's economy. While China's role as a global manufacturer remains solid, the big question looming over cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen is what happens when factories relocate in more remote areas. Labor costs are rising even in some of the lesser-known cities, but not nearly as fast as in the tier-one cities, which experienced labor increases of 500 percent between 2001 and 2006. "Labor costs increased an average of three times in our factory during the last 10 years," says David He of Hong Kong's Ling Tin Capacitor. The company set up shop in Dongguang, Guangdong province, a decade ago because of cheaper labor and land resources. Since then, the average monthly income for workers in He's factory increased from (US) $40 to $120, while salaries for engineers and management increased from $200 to $600 or more. The company is still doing well, but He is worried about the upward trend line in labor costs. So far the company has no plans to relocate because of its proximity to customers and international shipping, yet for the first time the company is beginning to watch the cost increases. International companies looking to set up manufacturing or expand their capabilities within China already are looking at lesser-known cities. Foxconn, a leading contract manufacturer, capitalized on low labor costs in Shenzhen 15 years ago, but it recently expanded into Yantai, Shandong province. Foxconn is the registered trade name of Hon Hai. The company contributes one third of Shenzhen's total electronics export and estimated (US) $21 billion in 2006 and employs 200,000 laborers. It negotiated a low-cost land deal and a very low corporate tax rate. Its recent push into Yantai, one of China's fastest-growing commercial ports where labor is significantly cheaper, signals a shift in thinking. In 2006, Hon Hai Group completed its deployment for the production of motherboards and printed circuit boards in northern China. Yantai Science & Technology Park of Shandong province in northern China has become Hon Hai Group's largest production base for panel-based products. Currently Hon Hai takes advantage of the huge talent pool in northern China to focus on the production of mobile communication products, such as cell phone cases and connectors on an OEM basis. The group said it would use its base in Yantai to tap the cell phone markets of Japan and South Korea. Nor is Hon Hai alone. Taiwanese manufacturing operations in Shenzhen are shifting in droves to Dongguan due to lower costs. Many market analysts believe the shift to less-developed regions will change the market demand landscape in China within the next several years. Despite the changes inside of China, labor costs there are still lower than in many other areas. That has made it difficult for companies to retain the most experienced engineers. Frank Yan, human resources director at a Chinese original design manufacturer, says the retention cost for engineers is much higher than the initial cost of hiring them. "The cost of hiring an engineer hasn't changed too much in last three years," Yan says. "But once an engineer leaves, we have to recruit this position. This is more costly. We have to spend time looking for the right candidates, conduct interviews and train them. And once we relax after completing this process, the engineer may leave the company." Yan says his company has set up a plan to allow top engineers to become shareholders after working there for a period of time. He says that will work well because everyone wants to be a boss in China. At present, engineers still earn more in tier-one cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen than in cities in western and Northeast of China. With three years' experience, an engineer can easily make $1,000 a month in Shenzhen. To help equalize those costs, some Shenzhen companies have begun recruiting in other cities such as Changsha (Hunan Province) and Xi'an (Shan'xi province).

And they would very much like, please, for that to happen. The issue was raised at the 2007 International Symposium on Regional Economic Cooperation along the New Silk Road held in Lanzhou, capital of Northwest China - Gansu Province.The symposium focused on the development of modern logistics in the region as well as the construction of cooperation networks for the cities along the route in China. The original 8,000-km Silk Road was a series of interconnected trade routes that once linked Changan (modern Xian) in China with Asia Minor and the Mediterranean. Revived, it has huge potential in promoting economic growth along the region. The proposed 10,900-km Eurasian continental bridge, also called the new Silk Road, is similar to the 2,100-year-old old Silk Road and will link China ports of Lianyungang and Rizhao with Amsterdam in Holland and Antwerp in Belgium. Kwaak Yong Hoon, chairman of the Korean KWAAK HwangKyung Group, said he hoped the road could be extended to his country. He said Park Geun-hye, one of the candidates for ROK presidential election this year, had promised to build a train-ferry link to connect ROK with the Chinese ports of Yantai, Qingdao and Rizhao. Mitsuo Honda, a professor of economics at the Japan-based Nihon University, says the huge industrial belt along the road could extend to Japan and the ROK when it came into being. He added that both Japan and the ROK could then benefit from the economic integration of Asia and Europe. True. If there is going to be a Silk Road then Japan and Korea would like to get in on the act. The savings in time it would make to container traffic to and from Europe would be substantial ?say half ?and thus make the goods more attractive. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), China ministries of commerce and information, and the Gansu provincial government sponsored the symposium. More than 500 delegates from 12 counties and regions along the new Silk Road attended the conference. Will it happen? Possibly. Perhaps. Maybe. But an immense amount of work and money will be needed to bring it to fruition. If, and it is a large if, it happens it could transform the relationships between the European Union and Asia. (Xinhua) Updated: 2007-07-06 10:21 Foreigners will find it easier to buy train tickets in the Chinese capital now that the city's major railway station has begun to provide services in English. Beijing Railway Station in the downtown area will staff two English-language information and ticket sales windows during the 62-day summer transport period starting Sunday. The railway station will open a total of 120 ticket windows during the hectic months of July and August, including windows for senior citizens and deaf and mute people. The station expects 5.99 million departures in the two busy months, up 6.5 percent from the same period of last year. Coastal cities such as Dalian, Qingdao and Yantai are expected to be popular with tourists and students anxious to escape the sweltering heat and pollution of the big cities. Up to 15 additional trains will operate on some busy routes, according to the office. Beijing West Railway Station, the capital's busiest, expects a record 7.55 million departures in the two peak summer months with a daily average of 122,000 passengers, up 12.8 percent over the same period last year. The station will arrange one extra inbound and one extra outbound train on nine routes, bringing the total number of services each day to 121. China's railway authorities raised the maximum train speed for the sixth time in April and 286 trains now run at up to 250 kilometers per hour every day. China's trains carried a quarter of the world's total passenger and freight rail transport last year, but the country has just six percent of the world's operational track, according to the Ministry of Railways .

Yantai Raffles Shipyard began construction of the super ship in 2005. 'Yacht Express is more than 130 feet longer than our largest carrier,' said van der Werf. 'It marks a major milestone in the development of the yacht transport industry, as it will not only accommodate more yachts on regularly scheduled trips to and from Florida and the Mediterranean but also it will deliver them faster.' With a service speed of 18 knots, Yacht Express is expected to reduce the time of a transatlantic voyage by nearly 50%, from 15 to 8 days. The ship also will feature amenities such as complimentary cabins for ride-aboard crew, an atrium with swimming pool, restaurant and cinema, as well as conference, media and fitness facilities. DYT has partnered with the International SeaKeepers Society to outfit the new ship with the modular SeaKeeper 1000TM ocean and meteorological monitoring system. The SeaKeeper 1000 is a fully automated unit that samples, measures, records and transmits critical measures of ocean health--salinity, temperature, oxygen and pollution, among others--to various scientific and public communities across the globe.
Following sea trials, Yacht Express will mobilize through Australia and New Zealand and to Florida before making a special appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show in September, where it will be re-christened and introduced to the yachting community.

Fifth body recovered from sunken ROK ship YANTAI, Shandong Province, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese divers recovered a fifth body on Saturday of a crew member from the Republic of Korea (ROK) cargo ship that sank off the east China coast following a collision with a container ship more than 10 days ago. The body was salvaged from the smoking room on the third deck of the sunken ROK ship "Golden Rose". The body is yet to be identified. The salvage operation is still going on. Chinese divers have recovered five bodies since the first one was found on Monday. One of the bodies was confirmed to be the captain's. The ROK ship sank last Saturday off the coast near Yantai, a city in Shandong Province, after it collided in heavy fog with "Jinsheng", a freighter operated by Shandong Lufeng Shipping Company Ltd. and registered in Saint Vincent. None of its 16 crew members have been found alive. Among the 16 sailors from the "Golden Rose," eight are ROK nationals, seven from Myanmar and one from Indonesia. China's Ministry of Communications launched a massive search and has sent 34 divers to the salvage operation since May 17.

Charity replaces fortune for today Shangdong Province on China's east coast has proposed a "Charity Day" on May 18 (today), traditionally a red-letter day in China because it's pronounced in Chinese very much like "I'll make a fortune."
The Shandong provincial government, however, has decided to take the opportunity to urge the richer people to help the needy, saying May 18 should read as "wo yao bang," meaning "I will help" in Chinese.
The date is actually pronounced in Chinese as "wu yao ba," which sounds very much like "wo yao fa," or "I will make a fortune." The date has therefore been an auspicious time to get married or launch a new firm.
In the run-up to the first ever Charity Day celebrations in China, charity organizations in Shandong, birth place of the two most prestigious ancient Chinese philosophers Confucius and Mencius, launched a massive one-yuan donation drive in April to involve more people in charity undertakings.
Organizers of the event hope to carry forward the centuries-old value of benevolence, preached by the two philosophers whose thinking is the essence of Chinese culture even today.

Knowing that she still needs to wait for matching stem cells for an operation, Luan passed on the donation, plus her own one yuan, to Gong Yufeng, a leukemia patient in central China's Hubei Province whose operation has been scheduled but badly needs the cash.
In Qingdao, Shandong, a non-governmental charity body known as "tiny dust" has been donating cash to needy people since the SARS epidemic outbreak in the spring of 2003. No one knows for sure how many members the organization has or who they are, but whenever someone is in need, a number of donors will send cash by mail or in person, leaving their names as "tiny dust."
"China is at an important stage to boost its charity undertakings as more people become rich," said Zheng Gongcheng, a professor at Renmin University in Beijing. "Charity work is also important in narrowing the gap between the rich and poor."
International Container Port Terminal Inc. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, ICTSI said first-quarter profit surged to $10.8 million, with its expanding overseas operations boosting revenues by 16 percent to reach $66.16 million. In a statement, the company said, "Foreign operations continue to be a significant contributor to earnings, accounting for 55 percent of consolidated net income." Recent expansion of ICTSI is the 20-year concession to operate a cargo terminal in Ecuador and the acquisition of a 60 percent stake in the Yantai Gangtong Container Terminal Co. Ltd. Yantai operates a port in China. At present, ICTSI operates container terminals here and in Poland, Brazil, Madagascar, Indonesia, Japan and Syria.
GM's performance depends largely on China April 28th, 2007 YANTAI, China: Yang Luzhou, who lives here in an industrial town facing North Korea across the bay, is about as far as can be from Americana. He is even farther from the nostalgic, patriotic Americana of John Mellencamp and his is Our Country,now the soundtrack for Chevrolet, the latest marketing campaign in the United States. But just the other day, the classic song The Bear Went Over the Mountain?and the Confederate anthem Dixie?wafted through the factory while he fiddled with a Chevrolet Aveo car door on a General Motors production line. I never thought Id be building Chevrolet products,?he said. I never heard of the Chevrolet brand when I was growing up.? General Motors is hoping to change that for future generations of Chinese. It is counting on Yang, 27, and his 2,000 fellow assembly line workers here to help produce 200,000 cars this year as part of a giant bet to turn the Chevrolet brand into a household name in China. As the worlds top auto executives gather in Detroit for the annual auto show there, one of the biggest questions is how GM will fare this year if, as is expected, Toyota passes it to become the worlds largest automaker. The answer will depend to a considerable extent on how GM performs in China, its second- largest market after the United States. The modern plant here is expected to double production this year. GM is also expanding at a second factory in southeastern China that makes tiny Chevrolet Spark sedans. And Chevrolet dealerships with gleaming windows and cushy chairs, high ceilings and advanced repair bays, are popping up along major avenues across China. To compensate for its troubles at home, GM is in a big hurry here. But building a brand that will capture car buyers in a vast developing country, going from Middle America to Middle China, is a lot harder than building one at home, over many decades. For one, GM in China is not exactly GM. Limited by Beijing to no more than 50 percent ownership of any auto assembly operation, it relies on two rival joint ventures to manufacture Chevrolets in China. GM is also heavily dependent in the Chinese market on Buick, the first brand it re-introduced here as the country moved from rigid communism to a hybrid form of rough-and-ready capitalism. Moreover, GM is in the midst of a global corporate reorganization, while it is starting to face daunting competition, as at home, from Toyota. GM now produces the Chevrolet Sail compact sedan, the slightly larger Chevrolet Aveo compact sedan and hatchback and the considerably larger Chevrolet Epica midsize car at a joint venture here with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., known mostly by its initials SAIC. But the tiny Chevrolet Spark subcompact comes from the separate Wuling joint venture with SAIC and Liuzhou Wuling Automotive, and is manufactured at Wulings factory in Liuzhou in southeastern China. Kevin Wale, the president of GMs China operations, acknowledged in an interview that forcing the two joint ventures to work together on Chevrolets image will take some work. Theres no question we need to make sure the brands dont diverge,?he said. GM has built its initial success here mainly on the strength of Buick, a symbol of luxury in China in the 1940s, before the Communists won the countrys civil war in 1949. But while state-owned corporations are still buying Buick Regal sedans to chauffeur their executives, a rising middle class has created a much larger market in the last five years for compact and subcompact cars. Buick began weakening its luxury image by introducing smaller and smaller cars, even including a compact Buick Sail sedan, to keep up. GM has now rebranded the compact as the Chevrolet Sail. But Buick still sells its own compact car, the Excelle, and a bare-bones Excelle sells for less than a fully loaded Sail. Complicating GMs big push in China is a fundamental change in how the company does business. GM is trying to cut costs and improve quality by centralizing more of its design, engineering and purchasing activities, mainly in Detroit, while erasing many of the bureaucratic differences that have long separated its operations in countries across the globe. But GMs China division became a juggernaut in part because it was practically a separate fiefdom until 2005. The division was known for its quick decision-making and independence while it was under Phil Murtaugh, who helped negotiate the agreement that allowed GM to open its first factory in Shanghai at the end of 1998. He then ran the company as it swiftly trounced Toyota, Honda, Nissan, DaimlerChrysler and Ford and nearly caught Volkswagen, the longtime market leader.
Doosan Infracore targets 3 tln won in sales in China by 2010 SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- Doosan Infracore Co., a South Korean machinery maker, said Monday it targets 3 trillion won (US$3.24 billion) in annual sales in China in 2010 as part of its goal to emerge as one of the top five companies in the global industry by then.
Last year, Doosan Infracore established Doosan Infracore China Investment Co. in Beijing to tap the Chinese market and to supervise its subsidiaries there.
The company plans to expand production facilities and set up a research and development center there. Doosan Infracore also said it would continue mergers and acquisitions to boost its assets in China.
The company established two manufacturing units -- Doosan Infracore Machine Tools Yantai Co. and Doosan Infracore China Co. -- in 1994. They posted a combined revenue of $600 million last year from excavator and machine tools sales.

Guangzhou Administration Will Conduct a Further Investigation on Fake Wine Hong Kong Chang Yu was not seen in the big supermarkets or hotels. CHINA: Strong start to year at Yantai Changyu Pioneer Yantai Changyu Pioneer Wine Co. has posted a lift in net profit for its first quarter. The Chinese wine company said today (23 April) that profits for the three months to the end of March hit CNY196.94m (US$25.5m), up from CNY149.82m in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. Total sales for the quarter also headed north, the company noted, reaching CNY995.75m against CNY911.41m. Two years ago, Italian spirits company Illva Saronno bought a 33% stake in Yantai Changyu Pioneer at a cost of CNY481.4m. The stake was sold by the Yantai city authorities.

How electronic reading panes are going to change the very nature of the business Now that the e-ink technology is maturing, the newspaper industry has decided that the time has come for serious testing and application. To mention a few: the French financial daily Les Echos is kicking off with a field test this month and the Italian La Repubblica is about to do the same. The Chinese Yantai group is already deploying electronic reading devices for over a year and the Dutch national dailies NRC and Volkskrant are finishing the last preparations for a test phase involving over a thousand readers. In the United States, 25 plus dailies are joining forces in a digital publishing alliance to explore the future potential of the technology (see contribution 1 for a brief e-reader introduction).

The Dutch-Flemish e-reader cooperation initiative entails national titles: De Volkskrant, Financieele Dagblad, a national free paper, SP!TS, a regional newspaper, Eindhovens Dagblad and a local title, Barneveldse Krant. From the research side EC/DC (the European Centre for Digital Communication) coordinates the project while the IBBT (Flemish research umbrella, responsible for the e-paper De Tijd project) delivers multiple expertise. A substantial part of the project budget comes from the Dutch Bedrijfsfonds (a newspaper development fund). The vision of this multi-party group is that the classical paper will gradually shrink from broadsheet over tabloid to a magazine format, and the electronic counterpart will have the reverse development curve, from tiny cell phone screens, via the present 8 inch-panels of the e-readers to ultimately the same magazine size, full colour, flexible, mobile, versatile. That will take another decade, but it clearly makes the case for thoroughly rethinking the journalistic newspaper approach.
The focus of the MePaper? project is on the development of novel journalistic formats, especially designed for electronic mobile reading. We have to leave ages of tradition in newspaper writing, lay-out and organisation behind us, if the trade doesnt want to become obsolete. That challenge knows an uncertain outcome and can only be met in an experimental set-up. This is precisely what the MePaper-project will organise: a development lab in which journalists rather than scientists start playing with the opportunities modern displays and software are offering. Journalistic focus must here be understood in a broad sense: writing staff, subediting, lay-out as well as the interplay between editorial and commercial content. The research partners will permanently be alongside, for ongoing reader testing of the prototype solutions and formats. Ultimately, the key for success lies at the user side, and the readers?perspective, habits, preferences and assessments have to be factored in throughout the process. This method of collaborative development in itself is new for the profession and worth monitoring.
Then, the technology pitch. Although the e-ink devices are at the heart of the project, other hard- and software developments will be followed as well. The newly designed journalistic formats will be tested at three different devices: the iRex iLiad, being the most advanced e-ink mounted reader, but also on one or more of the present ultra-thin laptops several manufacturers are bringing to market and even a sideline to game consoles. They all have their specific use profile, and probably will have a dedicated market and distinguishable prime target group. Who knows, the older hard core paper readership will fall for the iLiad, while the young urban professionals will dash off with their miniPCs and the youth will read the news in between the cracking and rivalling at their PlayStation console.
The MePaper team will towards the end of the two-year project also look into the consequences of new electronic content for the best possible newsroom organisation model. If readers and reading become fully mobile, why on earth should one keep the content producers all physically together? Many pros and cons to be mentioned here, but newsroom organisation certainly will become a big issue.
Yantai Raffles shipyard to build third rig for Awilco Exciting year ahead says Yantai Raffles chairman
Singapore headquartered Yantai Raffles Shipyard Limited (YRS?, following an option exercised, has signed a new contract to build a third semi-submersible rig for Norwegian firm Awilco Offshore Semi ASA The GM4000-D rig is a semi-submersible unit with a dynamic positioning system, accommodation unit and ballasting system designed to support duties such as intervention and drilling. Dubbed the WilPromoter? the vessel will be deployed to operate in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea upon completion. The rig is the third to be built for Awilco Offshore, who currently have two other semi-submersible rigs under construction at the Yantai shipyard.
Two of the rigs have been awarded long term drilling contracts by Norsk Hydro Produksjon AS.

Yantai Raffles Shipyard announces yet another new order Chairman was confident yesterday...now we know why!
Following hard on the heels of their announcement of winning an order for a new oil platform, Yantai Raffles Shipyard announced today that it has received a contract from Saipem (43% owned by Eni), for the design and construction of an Iced Strengthened Pipe Lay Vessel of DP3 class.
The 290m long vessel, with a molded breadth of 39 m, will be built under the American Bureau of Shipping classification.
The purpose-built DP pipelay and subsea construction vessel lays pipelines and supports developments in deep waters. With a main deck height of 24 m, it has an operating draught ranging from 7 to 10 m.
The 43,000 ton vessel, complete with S-Lay Pipe System with the future option of installing a J-Lay System, will be equipped with a 600 metric ton Mast Crane and two 55 ton pipe handling gantry cranes. It will have superior standard accommodation facilities for a total of 538 persons.
The vessel is expected for delivery in early 2010. Upon completion, the vessel will be fit to operate worldwide, including the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Barents Sea, South Atlantic, West African Coast, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific North of Australia.

Hon Hai steps up investments in Mainland China CENS Mar 06, 2007 Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Taiwan's largest private-sector manufacturer, recently announced eight mainland China-bound investment projects, five of which are brand-new ones. These investment projects are concentrated on northern and northeastern China, signifying Hon Hai's ambition to move mainland deployment northwardly. Based on these newly launched investment projects, Hon Hai will expand production of molds in Yantai of Shandong Province and Wuhan of Hubei Province, each costing US$15 million and US$10 million, respectively. In the northeastern China region, Hon Hai will set up two precision electronics subsidiaries each in Yangkou of Liaoning Province and Qinhuangdao of Hebei Province, each of which will cost US$5.144 million. The two above-mentioned firms will focus on the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The company said it would invest US$8 million to set up an electronic technology firm in Huaian of Anhui Province for the production of electronic connectors and wire and cable assembly. It will also set aside US$2.1 million to expand production capacity in its already-established Kunshan plant in Jiangsu Province. As for the production of parts for cellphones, Hon Hai will expand the production capacity of its Tianjin Foxconn Technology Co. with an investment of US$4 million. In Dalian of Liaoning Province, Hon Hai will invest US$9.4 million to set up a new plant for the production of automobile parts and bolts and nuts. Based on Hon Hai's investment blueprint, its new plant in Wuhan will be inaugurated sometime in August and first batch of digital still cameras will be officially rolled out in mid-October this year. Pushed by high winds, China's strongest storm tides since 1969 churned across the East China Sea yesterday, capsizing nine ships. Rescue vessels were dispatched after an SOS was received from the endangered ships shortly after midnight Saturday. But it took them four hours to reach the scene in strong winds, according to Song Jiahui, director of the Ministry of Communications rescue department. By yesterday afternoon, 111 people had been plucked from the wintry waters in a successful rescue operation involving four fishing boats and two fishery administration vessels.
