The History of Guinness

Guinness is a name that we associate with many things from a record book, to beer. I know that many people will probably think of Guinness as a beer first, but probably do not know the history of Guinness and how the small company started out and managed to grow into this large international company that we know today. I know that I didn't know much about this company until I did some research and I thought I would share what I found about Guinness and the history of this excellent company.

Guinness actually started out very small in the town of Leixlip before the owner and brewer decided to move to Dublin in 1759[1] for a larger brewery. When he moved the brewery and production to Ireland the number of people drinking Guinness skyrocketed and in 1769 Guinness was exported out of Ireland to various parts of the world for other people to enjoy this excellent high quality brew. The original brew was based off of a porter style of beer that was in London[2] at the time, but with Guinness they made their own flavor and variations.

The thought of Guinness being drunk all over the world allowed the company to continue to grow and expand. While the company now employs many people in Ireland and at the breweries Guinness also started a storehouse that would help increase tourism in Ireland and it eventually became Ireland's number one tourist attraction[3]. In just four short years the Guinness storehouse would welcome over 2 million visitors which for any attraction is a great achievement.

If you do manage to make it to Ireland and the Guinness storehouse you will not be disappointed because you will find many benefits to traveling here. However, Guinness has been around for two hundred and fifty years now you will know that you can enjoy many of the benefits of drinking Guinness if you are of legal age. While Guinness has faced many challenges over the year you can rest assured that they managed to deal with all of these challenges that were presented to them and still thrived.

Now that you know a little bit about the history of Guinness you can remember to thank Arthur Guinness for allowing Guinness to still be around and for expanding the company into what it is now. I know that at the time he started the company expanding into an international company was ten times harder than what it is now because he did not have the internet or even the assistance of phones to grow his company.

Ode to my Guinness (by Arnie Bjorkland)

Seldom have I ever seen an Irish

Tavern with beer so green. That sentence make me laugh. The

Patty's day celebration forced its way into my life.

Akin to Mardi Gras or Halloween. We only get ONE NIGHT!

There is no escaping the laughter,

The hash or the Guinness. I'm surrounded.

Yet a feeling of calm washes over me, as I

Sip the thick head and

Dip my index finger into the dark ale. I love this holiday, yes I do.

And it doesn't matter that I'm not Irish, not a redhead and not even a

Youngin' any more. My goal this year is to remember.
